Meet Jen Simone | Violinist-performer, studio musician and teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Simone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in LA and moved to Chicago when I was 4. In 3rd grade, I saw people playing violin for an assembly. I was spellbound & asked my Mom if could learn to play violin. I was fortunate to have a parent who loved music & was able to get me a violin. She not only supported my lessons but took me to concerts often which inspired me. There were music programs not only in my public school but also at the local music center where I took private lessons and played chamber music. In high school I had an incredible orchestra teacher who encouraged me ro become a professional violinist. Playing in Chicago Youth Orchestra every Saturday during highschool also helped solidify that I wanted to be a music major in college. It was amazing to meet fellow musicians with different backgrounds from all over the Chicago area and perform together. Because I was fortunate to have music in my schools, I have always loved teaching students throughout my career in addition to performing and recording.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a violinist, I am grateful that my education gave me the confidence to pursue a career in music. Upon graduation, I learned that there were many essential things that I would have to teach myself and learn with each music gig I have had. Even though I have played violin for decades, I love that my sound is always evolving based on life experiences and every artist I get to work with. While being freelance can be challenging financially at times, I love that every week is different and I am constantly meeting new people and I get to play in beautiful spaces. Gigs are my happy place because the sole purpose is to play music with people and create something beautiful no matter what our personal story is or beliefs are. The biggest lesson I have learned is to be patient, kind & compassionate with each job so hopefully clients will want to continue to work with me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have lived in LA again since 2012. My happiest places are tranquil, artistic and provide a sense of community.
Malibu-hanging at Zuma beach or grabbing a bite at Geoffrey’s
Silver Lake-Walking the Res or grabbing a drink at L&E Oyster
Echo Park-doing yoga at One Down Dog
Los Feliz-Walking in Griffith Park or eating at Casito del Campo
Musically speaking, Kamasi Washington is my favorite artist that I have been blessed to play with. He is a gift so check out his shows when you can because he & his band are out of this world.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom was my biggest supporter and came to every concert that I ever played through my senior recital in college. Her love of the arts & enthusiasm in attending concerts & art openings had a huge impact on me.
My Highschool orchestra teacher-Mr. Fowler encouraged me to work hard and believed in my talent and felt that I could pursue becoming a professional violinist. Highschool was a challenging time for me but playing music was a beautiful escape and helped me believe in myself.
