We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Berry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that risk is an important part of life, without it many people may not have challenged themselves to reach their own personal goals whether in business or personal obstacles. Without risk would we always be making our best effort? I doubt it. The possibility of failure pushes us to try our best, My Dad would always say to me whenever I was struggling with something, “If it was easy, everyone would do it.”. It reminded me to do my best and if I did that, I wouldn’t have any regrets with the outcome of my effort.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My photography is something I have always described as the candid in-between moments. I love capturing the beauty in moments that aren’t staged and develop naturally.

I began learning photography in high school on my Dad’s 1970’s Minolta, with black & white film, a dark room and developing my own film & prints. It gave me a wonderful foundation and understanding of the science behind creating the perfect exposure and timing as well as manipulating the different settings for creative expression.

I was a Clinical Laboratory Scientist for more than a decade prior to becoming a photographer. Photography was always a hobby that I loved and Covid gave me the opportunity to practice my beloved interest and with the support and encouragement of others it grew into my own business.

I have learned not to take rejection personally, we all have our own unique perspective on the world around us and my view point cannot be the perfect fit for every potential client.

I am always looking to challenge myself and expand my craft & knowledge. As a photographer I have the ability to give someone the gift of cherished moments, showing them the beauty they might not see in themselves and perhaps capture memories that they wouldn’t have otherwise.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a lover of the outdoors, natural light is everything to me and my itinerary would definitely include visiting the beach, most likely a dog beach, hiking a mountain trail, perhaps visiting Joshua Tree, Torrey Pines, the Zoo or Balboa park with it’s many museums and fabulous architectures. We are lucky to have these different landscapes and monuments within our reach here in SoCal. There are so many local eateries that are doing such a great job of highlighting different cultures and cuisines from Old Town, Little Italy, the Missions and the many breweries and wineries all within a single days drive. I am also fond of visiting the different farmers markets and enjoying local produce and supporting other neighborhood artisans’.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Shoutout would be dedicated to my husband, who has believed in me and my successes always before I have and has been my biggest supporter for nearly 23 years. I would also like to thank my high school photography teacher Mr. Douglas Nordrum, my friend Liz Finch and the Tumbleweed Riding Club for their early support in my career as well.
