We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaylin Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaylin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
What I love about being an entrepreneur is the control of my own destiny. No one decides if I get a pay raise, promotion or what job I do, but me. It’s a beautiful and terrifying freedom, but at least you’re the driver.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The mortgage industry has had a tough couple of years but what I’m most proud of is that I never listen to the noise. I can hear what is going on, but I don’t let it control my mindset.

Last year, when listings were low, I spent my time and energy calling sellers to get my realtor partners through the door. It felt like running into the issue instead of whining about it. I wanted my referral partners to know I am here to help their business grow, not just wait for them to give me a lead. I work very hard to give more referrals than they give me. This sets me apart from the other lenders showing up with their hand out. I am a giver and it feels so good to call someone with an appointment. What I learned is that you have to make sure the relationship is mutual. It’s hard to give referrals to people if you don’t think they will take the ball and run. You have to make sure you and your referral partners are aligned when it comes to drive and motivation.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place to have breakfast is the Broken Yolk. For lunch I love Sea180 because of the amazing view. When it comes to dinner it’s hard to choose. I love Cannonball and Mr A’s. We would have to spend some time in Little Italy for sure. When it comes to walking along the boardwalk Pacific Beach is a must because there is so much to do. We would have to go to La Jolla and no trip is complete without Balboa Park. For fun we would go to The Shout House or Werewolf right next door.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two jobs I had in college that shaped me into the business woman I am today. One was Doral Arrowwood Resorts and Weichert Realtors.

Doral had a customer training that all employees had to take about putting the customer first. At the time I was in my 20’s and did not understand the full magnitude to appreciate they were offering me a lifetime lesson. For example: one requirement was that everyone had to see the guest with in 10 feet and say hello in 5. No more walking around with your head down. We not only did it with guest, but with each other. It is where I learned, how to treat a client.

Weichert realtors had the best training about taking care of the client, each other, and the road map to consistency. What a gift. I became a top listing agent my 1st year working with Weichert and I still use a lot of their training today.
