We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay and Steph Rose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay and Steph, how do you think about risk?
Risk is at the heart of Phase SiX; the success of Phase SiX today is largely attributed to one risky business decision Steph and I made when building this movement. Phase SiX is constantly striving to push the boundaries, and risk is inherently part of this.

We saw Phase SiX as the Punk Rock of the industry, which would be a non-conformist multimedia brand set out to begin a REVOLUTION by uniting people around a shared purpose: promote longevity, maximize potential, and bring value to the world. We set out to achieve this by sharing our passion with a global audience, providing them with innovative training, unconventional ideas and methods, as well as entertaining our audience with exciting content. We fought to switch the mentality of short-term results by focusing on health, and human and environmental longevity, by questioning the ’norm’ and creating a new paradigm for consumers. At the same time, we promote the connection that we all share by eradicating the segregation and tribalism of the fitness industry.

We started Phase SiX on 7 June 2018. We quickly realized we needed more education in order to achieve our goal of creating a revolution of informed, innovative and healthy people. Queue the aforementioned risky decision. We made a list of our greatest inspirations and elite coaches/trainers who we wanted to learn from, as well as experts, athletes and brands we wanted to collaborate with – and made it happen. We took all the money we had saved for a house and invested it in a 6-month trip around USA (hitting California, Texas and New York City). We trained with, learnt from and worked with the likes of John Wolf and Shane Heins (Creators of the ONNIT education system), Cameron Shayne (Creator of Budokon), Roger Gracie (10x Jiu Jitsu World Champion), Maurício Gomes and many others. We brought a videographer along with us to document the entire trip, in pursuit of our goal to unite all practices of health, content-creation, goal-setting and longevity under one umbrella.

What should our readers know about your business?
Phase SiX was born when we decided to pursue our passion for unconventional training methods, media and entertainment. Prior to this, we found it extremely difficult to source quality education or trainers with expert knowledge of unconventional training methods. We were also extremely dissatisfied with the image of the fitness industry: the outdated (by at least 30 years) education curriculum being taught at “fitness” institutions and the focus on short term results and “high volume” training being spread through popular “functional fitness” franchises. This proliferation of unsustainable, poorly designed, short-term training style was causing many injuries and directly preventing people from achieving their goals. We were regularly confronted with this short-sighted mindset being rapidly spread and sold through mainstream media.

Phase SiX is more than a brand, it’s a platform of empowerment. Our mission is simple yet compelling: to become the world’s go-to source for fitness, education, news, entertainment and content creation. Our elite multimedia company strives to interweave health with entertainment, fitness with wellness, and self-awareness with self-empowerment. Our Phase SiX training program is designed to create leaders, not followers, with a longevity mindset who are enlightened on how to perform at their highest potential, without fear or doubt. We inspire individuals to innovate and create value for their world, highlighting the ways in which we can interact with and influence those around us. We aim to craft a paradigm shift, guiding individuals to self-awareness and the understanding of the complete control they hold over their reality and circumstances, as well as the effects of their choices on the environment and other people. We want to constantly question what is generally believed as true and what is considered the norm. We relentlessly test the many theories and methods to enhance performance, usually via negativa (by removing one component to determine its effect while keeping all other conditions constant). Our content is designed to excite, engage and motivate, to revolutionize the perception of what the fitness industry looks like.

We are incredibly excited about several upcoming transformations and additions to Phase SiX, including a roll-out of our Phase SiX education curriculum, expanded training programs, and our first ever Phase SiX Certifications that will be hosted in Austin, Texas this September as well as a 2-day workshop in San Diego in Novemeber.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Clark Gracie Academy – it would be remiss of us if we didn’t mention one of our all-time favorite Jiu-Jitsu Academies. We have been fortunate enough to train with and learn from the legendary Gracie family many times while building Phase SiX. If you practice BJJ in the SoCal area, you already know of the Clark Gracie Academy. For any visiting friends with an interest in BJJ, this one is a must.

Trilogy Sanctuary houses an amazing restaurant that serves vegan dishes. Neither of us are vegan, but Trilogy Sanctuary more than compensates for a lack of animal products with a powerhouse of flavors. To be clear, this isn’t just great by the standards of vegan food, it’s great food that happens to be vegan.

La Jolla Cove – A great area that balances accessibility, good food, picturesque coastline, and a fantastic ecological reserve (with a local colony of sea lions). There’s no better option for a day in the sun to swim, explore boardwalks, and check out the sea caves.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Listening to the stories of entrepreneurs like Bob Proctor, Gary Vaynerchuk & Elon Musk really helped us when Phase SiX was just an idea and allowed us to turn our vision into a reality. Additionally, we always like to give a huge shoutout for all the support and inspiration we received from John Wolf and Shane Heins, Cameron Shayne, Roger Gracie and the rest of the Gracie family, especially in the beginning of our journey. We are also extremely grateful for the continued support of incredible individuals and brands we are partnered with: Hydro Flask, Vivobarefoot, Jeremy Hills, Khalil Rafati and TK Stretching. Some of our favorite books that have steered our thinking include the classics Think and Grow Rich (Napoleon Hill), The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (Joseph Murphy), and Psycho-Cybernetics (Maxwell Maltz).
