We had the good fortune of connecting with Javier Salazar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Javier, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose an artistic career because because it gives me a chance to shed light on the need for immigration reform and give a voice to the unheard, something that I could not do at a regular job.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a reflection of not just my reality but of all the peoples in my situation. My art highlights the need for immigration reform and sheds light on those living in the shadows. Through my art we have gained visibility and a voice, a chance to tell our stories. It has not been easy and Ive fought many prejudices along the way but if there is something I have learned is that if we don’t tell our own stories someone else will tell it for us according to their point of view and political agenda. Migration is life and therefore a human right!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Tijuana there are so many spots to eat and drink but I have always loved its street food, the tacos are the best in the world. I would take my friend to a taco tour and then take him to drink around Revolution Street where there are a bunch of craft breweries. Playas de Tijuana is a must see and is pretty impactful with the border wall in the background

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife has been encouraging me to pursue my artistic career from the beginning. When I was scared to leave a stable job she pushed me to take the leap of faith. None of this would have been possible without her.
