Meet Jason Nichols | (Aka) J. Andrew. Singer/songwriter/hip hop artist/producer/bassist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Nichols and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, what do you want your legacy to be?
I love music, and being able to create it feels like the greatest gift one could have. I want my legacy to be an extensive catalog of music not limited to one genre. When im gone from this planet, I want people to remember me as the guy who was not afraid to switch lanes and do the unexpected. I grew up listening to a variety of music and I’ve always looked up to artists that kept you guessing how they would change up their sound.
So leaving behind music that may appeal to multiple audiences, in my opinion, would be the ultimate accomplishment and legacy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started playing guitar at an early age. Naturally I joined bands through high school. But not just one genre, I played in metal, punk, ska, and even jazz bands. I grew up listening to everything including hip hop. I started messing around with producing beats when I was 18 or 19. After a year or so of making music for other rappers I started recording myself under the name J. Andrew. Andrew is actually my middle name. That stage name stuck with me through the years. As of right now, ive put out 10 albums as J. Andrew, and most of that music is hip hop based. I’ve also done a TON of songs with other artists from across the US, Canada, and Australia. My latest album is called “Down,'” and is available on all streaming platforms. Also, I play bass for The Yucks, a legendary san diego punk band.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San diego is full of fun and exciting things to do and see. First off is the food. There’s plenty of fancy restaurants but Im partial to the taco shops.
Music music music.
San diego has a this crazy diverse music scene that couldn’t be experienced in even a week. So we would be definitely going to see everything the beautiful city has to offer sonically.
Then theres the beaches. Different parts of our coastline offer different vibes and experiences. My personal fave is Ocean Beach because of how laid back the vibe is.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely. There’s a ton of people Im extremely grateful and have the utmost respect for. Lisa Monday-Gomez, Bart Mendoza, Lou Niles, and everyone I’ve ever worked with. All of these people have contributed to not only my growth as an artist, but have also continued to build San Diego’s music scene up in a positive way.
