Meet Jason Chipkin | Volunteer Animal Rescue Pilot

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Chipkin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
As a passionate aviator since 1998, I found my wings in more ways than one when I began volunteering for charitable flights in 2006. Over the years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of flight, particularly when it comes to giving dogs a new leash on life. For me, there’s no greater joy than seeing these furry passengers find their furever homes, escaping hazardous, dangerous, and neglected environments.
Central to this mission is Pilots N Paws (PNP), a remarkable non profit organization fueled by the dedication of volunteer pilots like myself. PNP serves as a vital bridge between rescue organizations and pilots, facilitating life-saving flights for animals in need.
Through PNP, pilots utilize their own aircraft or rental planes, coordinating directly with rescues to transport dogs across the state or in some cases across several states by linking more than one pilot.
Pilots and Paws volunteer pilots work hand-in-paw with other organizations to ensure the success of each flight. Local rescue coordinators play a crucial role in identifying dogs in need of transport, as well as coordinating logistics such as ground transportation and veterinary care. Meanwhile, pilots lend their expertise in aviation to safely transport these precious cargo to their destination. Together, they form a seamless network of compassion and collaboration, united by a shared goal of giving animals a second chance at happiness.
In addition to directly aiding animals in need, Pilots N Paws also provides invaluable support to local rescue organizations. By offering free transportation services, PNP helps alleviate the burden on shelters and rescue groups, allowing them to focus their resources on other critical areas such as medical care, adoption efforts, and community outreach. Through these collaborative efforts, PNP strengthens the overall animal welfare ecosystem, creating a ripple effect of positive change in communities across the country.
Beyond volunteer efforts and rescue flights, each of us can play a crucial role in reducing the number of dogs discarded by their owners. By promoting adoption from shelters and rescue organizations, we can provide loving homes to animals in need and help alleviate overcrowding in shelters. It’s essential for prospective pet owners to fully understand the obligations and responsibilities of animal ownership before bringing a furry friend into their lives.
Through education and awareness, we all can ensure that every adoption is a lifelong commitment filled with love and companionship. Take the first step today by searching for rescues or adoption organizations in your local area, and open your heart and home to a deserving animal in need.
For me, being part of PNP is more than just a volunteer opportunity; it’s a calling. Each flight represents a chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of dogs and their future families. Whether it’s a short hop or a cross-country journey, every flight is a testament to the collective compassion and dedication of the PNP community.
One of the most remarkable aspects of PNP is its inclusivity and flexibility. Any pilot can join, regardless of experience levels. There are no fees or minimum commitments or additional FAA currency requirements, allowing pilots to select flights based on their schedule and location. While rescue coordinators may suggest departure and arrival cities, pilots ultimately have the right to choose flights that align with their preferences and availability.
Joining PNP isn’t just about flying; it’s about joining a movement dedicated to giving animals a second chance at happiness. As we soar through the skies, we carry with us the hopes and dreams of countless dogs awaiting their chance to find love and security.
Together, we’re not just pilots; we’re partners in compassion, making a difference one flight at a time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In addition to my passion for aviation and volunteer work, I serve as a professional air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), at Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON). Despite the exciting and challenging demands of this career, my wife (also an approach controller) and I make it a priority to dedicate time to providing rescue flights for animals in need through Pilots N Paws. Balancing the intricacies of air traffic control with the fulfillment of saving lives in the air underscores my commitment to both my profession and my altruistic endeavors. Through careful time management and unwavering dedication, I strive to make a pawsitive impact both in the skies and on the ground.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A heartfelt shout-out to all the volunteer rescues, fosters and pilots who have generously donated their time, skills, and resources to make these transports a success. Their dedication and compassion have given countless dogs (and other critters) a new leash on life, and their contributions are truly appreciated.
