Meet Jamar Williams | Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamar Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamar, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process of me starting my own business is the financial freedom that I have i get along with others and I work with others very well but it’s something about having a manager and or supervisor hovering over your every move also you get to make your own schedule if I had a regular 9-to-5 job maybe I don’t feel like getting out of bed or going into work to deal with other employees or clients being a hairstylist I have the freedom and the choice to schedule my clients around my every day life and I get to go at my own pace
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So becoming a hairstylist and doing hair was not my first choice I’m gonna take you guys back to when I was a young child my mother wasn’t always there so I had to do my little sisters hair for school and other things now her hair texture is extremely difficult to deal with and I’m only seven or eight years old at the time but somehow it came natural to me so I kept at it I started styling my best friend Amelia here when we were in junior high and high school other students in Friends noticed her looks and would always ask her who does your hair that’s how I started building up my clientele also becoming more creative with hairstyles so as time started to go by and I’m getting older I started working in the salon now that was the difficult part because I was a new face and at the time I was not licensed so people weren’t really gravitating to me but I was determined to move up in the business and so I did
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love food food food food lol I like to try all different types of food so if you ask me where is a good place to go I cannot name just one another place definitely the mall you have to hit up the malls the gaslamp is a great place so many things and activities here to do and you can never ever come to the West Coast and not visit the beach and there are also so many things to do at the pier the boardwalk in the bay
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh my gosh there is so many people that I would love to give a shout out to but I want to keep it short Chatney Dawson and Layla were the first two ladies to ever gave me a job in the salon and taught me so many things that I still hold with me to this day I assisted for Chatney often on for about seven years when I was 18 she took me under her wing and believed in me because she knew what I was capable of and my work speaks for itself layla was the first lady to give me a booth in her salon as a braider but ultimately it’s my family my nieces my nephews and little cousins who look up to me coming from where I come from not a lot of opportunities are giving to us so we have to work hard for everything that we have and I take pride in doing so
