We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Weisfeld and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
While working at my last job, I realized that my boss wasn’t smarter or more creative than me he just works hard and never gives up. That realization empowered me to believe in my own ability to create a brand and run a business. My thought process was…I’m young and have nothing to lose; playing it “safe” now is the easiest way to miss out on the life that I’ve dreamed of since being a kid. I looked at things I do naturally and thought about how to make them into a brand. I naturally push people to get out of their comfort zone and try new things, I also love skateboarding. The boards I make are easier than traditional boards, so my company ethos is summed up in our slogan “Hop on”. It’s all about hopping on and giving something you never thought you could do a chance.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I created a new style of skateboard that is easier to ride than a traditional board. It has helped people start skating or get back into it. I get emotional when people tell me how I helped them get back outside and regain their trust in their skating abilities. Or when my boards are given as gifts and the recipient is overjoyed. Main lessons I have learned: -everything takes way longer than expected, get to work now -finding the right person for the job should flow, no need to force it -reminders of why you do it is key, I like reading messages from fans and reviews to remember why I sit on the computer and ship things out all day -discipline equals freedom. I want everyone to know that Chub Skateboards and balance boards are not intimidating. They are made so you can get comfortable balancing!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First we would take a Chub Cruiser and head down the Pacific Beach Boardwalk, hop in the ocean and then grab smoked fish tacos from Oscars. Then catch sunset at Law Street Park. The next day we would cruise out to valley of the moon for hiking, climbing and sleeping in a hidden cave.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First I must shoutout my parents. I know I’m not doing what they planned, but they have believed in me every step of the way. I also want to shoutout all the people who have offered me advice, connections, and words of encouragement. You may not know it, but your help has been pivotal for me. Lastly, I want to shoutout the book Shoe Dog and Losing my Virginity. They have been key in my personal development and trust in the process of entrepreneurship.
