We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie Corney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackie, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
On September 10th of 2018, my husband and I had our first born son “gooned” in the middle of the night for a serious drug addiction. He was 17 years old at the time and we sent him to Second Nature Wilderness therapy in Utah’s Uinta Mountain Range. His addiction, which began at 14, had enveloped his life and had begun sinking the rest of us. In our minds, we had no other choice, as we had to protect our other 3 children and our marriage.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Moxie Tales is a fashion storytelling company! I believe that every day when you get dressed, you are telling a story. What story are you currently telling? What story do you want to tell? Most importantly, are you open, vulnerable, and ready to tell your new story? Moxie Tales’ company mission is to help you tell, build, and deliver moxie to YOUR STORY. Our growing collection of carefully curated accessories were handpicked and designed with YOU in mind.

What sets me apart from others?

My “why” and my blog, which all connect back to mental health.

What am I most proud of or excited about?

Our son will be sober 2 years in June 2024!!!!

Additionally, last summer, a mom came up to me at a concert and told me that sharing our story saved her daughter’s life and also saved their family. She told me that sharing our personal story gave her and her husband the courage to not only get their daughter help, but to walk through the fire with her and rise from the ashes stronger than ever.

How did I get to where I am today business-wise?

I got to where I am today by never forgetting my “why”, which drives me to always move forward. No, it was not easy. The way I overcome challenges is by focusing on small wins, humor, and not sweating the small stuff. The biggest lesson I have learned along the way is that if you go straight on a curvy road, you are not going to make it.

What do I want the world to know about my brand and my story?

I would like the world to know that Moxie Tales is a brand focused on connection, change, and purpose.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Carlsbad and don’t venture too far typically! Some of my favorite restaurants are Firenze in Rancho Santa Fe, Thai Society in Encinitas, Taco Stand in Encinitas, Crust Pizzeria in Solana Beach, Corner Pizza in Encinitas, Pannikin in Encinitas, Breakfast Republic in Encinitas and Flower Child in Del Mar. My favorite coffee shop is Lil Jungle Java-I have been going there for 22 years! I would say my favorite bar is Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe-the staff is amazing and we enjoy “The Piano Man” Randy Beecher’s entertainment!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many people to thank! The name Moxie Tales was conceived shortly after meeting with Ryan Berman, Encinitas author of Return on Courage and Founder of Courage Brands. I read his book and had a BIG vision, but was still all over the place…my brain and ideas were like confetti pieces floating around in the middle of a parade. Ryan helped me get the pieces together so that I had a starting point. He said “the kite is flying you; you are not flying the kite”. He taught me that I must slow down, define my brand values, and dig deep rather than wide.

With the help of Encinitas business owner Laura Buelke of VPG Printing, we defined Moxie Tales, created a mission statement, and filed for a trademark on 12/31/19.

Khara Serrato of Khara Collective Boutique in Carlsbad helped connect me with packaging, stationery, and local word of mouth advertising. Ruth Ann Reese and Heather Stambaugh-Huddleston of San Diego based Business Infusion have helped me from day 1 with my website. They helped me set it up and have been by my side supporting me ever since.

My dear friends Nedra Fabito and Joanna Trailov along with my husband and kids have also provided me with immeasurable support. Finally, my Moxie Tales clients and followers, who have unwittingly taught me a thing or two about fortitude and the immense power of prayer.
