Meet Izabella Bartolome | NYU Speech Language Pathology Graduate Student

We had the good fortune of connecting with Izabella Bartolome and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Izabella, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I believe that mastering time management to the best of my ability is what has helped me succeed. I find that if I schedule out my time, even my “fun time”, I will create the most productivity in my day. By scheduling everything from work to house chores and personal care to date night, I give myself the most control of my time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Today, I am a first year graduate student at NYU where I study Speech Language Pathology. This is a field that I really am passionate about and find great joy in studying. I believe that I entered into this field with the desire to help anyone and everyone I could – I still think this is what sets me apart. Most people work to make money and success and although those two things are necessary for a happy life, what is absolutely essential is satisfaction and pride in the work you do to help others. I truly cannot wait to work with my first patient or give my first pep talk to a coworker; our interactions with others every single day is what can make the biggest difference.
There are an abundance of challenges that come with being a full time student, wife, friend, and daughter but ultimately all you need to do is remember why you are doing it and that you CAN do it. Enable yourself by learning more about yourself – what gives you energy? what drains you? what makes you feel empowered and capable?
Along with the challenges comes lessons learned and wisdom gained. If I could go back and do any of these years over I would tell myself to marry my best friend sooner, hug my family tighter, and to ask more questions from the people who I look up to (personally & professionally). Always be eager to learn & never be too prideful to ask questions or to take risks!
At the end of the day, nothing is more important than the impact you have on those around you as well as those you just pass by on the day to day. If we’re here for anything, it’s to do our best to show one another unfailing and unconditional love; to improve the life of your neighbor and to spend your time serving others – once that is your goal, the rest will come together!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am personally new here to San Diego, but I can say it is definitely a fun place to host guests! Here is our week long itinerary:
1. Hit some of the best beaches – I personally love Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, CA.
2. Walk some trails – my favorite so far is Torrey Pines (unreal views!)
3. FOOD! There is some amazing food out here…
Taco Stand – The 101, Encinitas, CA
Lofty Coffee – Carlsbad, CA
Vintana Wine & Dine – Escondido, CA
Brockton Villa Restaurant – La Jolla, CA
Mama Kat’s – San Marcos, CA
4. One of the best ways to walk off all of that food is to shop! We’d have to check out Westfield UTC in La Jolla.
5. Last but not least has to be Disneyland in Anaheim!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first shoutout has to go to my husband; he truly represents patience, love, kindness, and care every single day! Without him I would spend many days being overwhelmed, nights studying without any nourishment, and overall way less encouragement and motivation to keep going. It is so important to have people around you who not only want to see you succeed, but help you get there. After him comes my incredible family who all encourage me on the day to day and remind me who I am!
