We had the good fortune of connecting with Izabela Sekowska and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Izabela, what principle do you value most?

It’s difficult to name just one value or principle that drives me.

Perhaps it’s a bit easier to find one that motivates most of my work in photography. I deeply believe that everyone has a unique gift. I think discovering what that gift may be and sharing it in a positive way, is one of life’s greatest and most challenging journeys. I strive to look for moments of authenticity and alignment and capture them in my work. That’s why I genuinely love photographing children. It’s humbling to experience how brave they are in terms of self-expression.  This process is much more difficult for my more grown-up subjects. I truly value when my clients let me in. Portrait work, or any form of storytelling of one’s unique experience can be quite vulnerable and I honor the trust that is put in me in that moment. It is extremely rewarding to see someone truly in their element. I am convinced that people smile differently when they do things they are meant to do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I find a lot of beauty in storytelling. I think an attentive closer look often reveals breathtaking images. I aim to connect with my subjects in a way that allows them to show up authentically. Unless the project requires it, I very rarely direct my subjects to offer a particular expression. Rather we engage in a conversation and come up with images in a more organic way. I’m excited to have those rare moments of connection through my work. It’s certainly nice to take the time to truly try to see the person in front of you.

Photography is not the only thing that I do, but it certainly is a passion project. I grew up in a photography studio and in a family in which everyone had a camera and had their unique style of expression. I returned to dedicating more time to photography several years ago, but the truth is this craft has always been an important part of my life, at times as a profession, and at times as a meditative practice. As with any creative endeavor, finding your own path is not easy. The work is personal in nature and surfaces a lot of questions and insecurities. This journey simply reminded me how important it is to continue to grow on a personal level. It has taught me to trust my voice.

My work is about honoring the story of my subjects. It is about authenticity and self-acceptance. I aim to create a safe space for someone to be seen. I find it inspiring that there are so many stories out there to be told and captured.  One of the projects soon to be released on my website is a story of Jenn, a young lady on the quest to conquer skateboarding. We spent numerous early morning hours together as she aimed to teach her brain and body to do something that she was told she will never be able to do. Capturing this kind of spirit is at the core of my work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

That is such a tough question. There is always so much to do and experience.

Beautiful nature, great unique food, meaningful conversation, searching for local hidden treasures, a beach walk and a bonfire are a must. A hike, a picnic with some food from a local mom and pop shop are also a great choice. The Glider Port, Caroline’s Cafe, the Fallen Star and Children’s Nature Retreat would make the list. Lastly, the search for the hidden swings in San Diego would have to be included.

I find activities that gently prompt discovery and reflection truly exciting. I would make sure that we get to explore something new. Something that would invite us to expand our perspective.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have been so fortunate to have incredible mentors and support throughout my journey. I am grateful for my family and friends, the community of photographers and fellow small business owners that continue to provide encouragement, mentorship and support. I would be amiss, if I did not mention my subjects, from the tiniest to the most mature, that inspire me with their vulnerability and stories of courage. I dedicate this shoutout to all of the above! Special shoutout goes to KiKi, Aga, Irene, Denusha, and Brittany for endless inspiration and motivation.
