We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivan Ng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ivan, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is staying true to myself and my artistic vision. I believe in capturing the unique color and aura of my clients through my photography. I genuinely connect with each client and understand their individual stories and ambitions, if not expectations, so I create images that not only reflect their personalities but also convey their compelling narratives. My authenticity and attention to detail have been key in building my clients’ trust in being in front of my camera and in establishing my brand.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an independent photographer, I specialize in capturing inspiring and eclectic images that my clients will cherish for years to come. Whether it’s professional portraits, editorial spreads, or commercial projects, I strive to capture the essence of every moment and bring out the best in each subject.

Having grown up in diverse locales like Hong Kong, Southern California, and Hawaii, I’ve developed a unique perspective that deeply influences my work. I use light, color, shapes, and lines to create harmonious contrasts that leave a lasting impression. My clients love my ability to capture exquisite beauty with intriguing depth in both candid and posed shots, offering a variety of styles tailored to their individual needs.

My adeptness in photography was a natural progression. What began as a hobby quickly evolved into a profound passion, leading to improved skills and a more sophisticated approach to photoshoots. Initially, this journey involved significant investment in quality equipment and software, making it a high-cost, low-return practice. However, I was fortunate to attract clients who appreciate high-quality photography and understand the importance of the craft. Their loyal support and belief in my work have been instrumental in overcoming challenges along the way.

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned that perseverance, continuous learning, and staying true to my artistic vision are crucial. What sets me apart is my commitment to capturing the unique essence of each client, creating images that authentically and beautifully tell their stories. By skillfully using the contrast of light and color, I build a strong brand identity, fostering trust in the creative process and the art of photography.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
“As cliché as it might sound, I’d take my best friend to the beach. Living in Southern California, we sometimes take the stunning coastline for granted, but for non-locals, it’s like something straight out of a magazine. The beaches here are perfect for photoshoots, weddings, and pure relaxation.

For a week-long trip, we’d rent a beachside Airbnb and enjoy a semi-staycation, exploring at our own pace. Mornings would start with coffee at a local café, followed by a leisurely breakfast at a beachside restaurant. Afternoons would be spent soaking up the sun or just relaxing indoors.

In the evenings, we’d dine at various local eateries, sampling fresh seafood and other delicious cuisine, or perhaps go grocery shopping and cook ourselves. We’d also explore a few of the area’s craft breweries and cocktail bars for some drinks. Of course, we’d make time to discover nearby attractions, like iconic viewpoints or hidden gems.

The beauty of this itinerary is its flexibility—it’s all about enjoying the moment and each other’s company. Whether we’re lounging on the beach or exploring local spots, the best part is being with friends and creating lasting memories together.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my college classmate Marc. When I was in school in Hong Kong, I sat next to him during class and noticed him editing photos he took at an abandoned school. I wasn’t into photography then, but I complimented his work, and he thanked me, offering to take me there to show me around. From that moment on, we explored different corners and elevations of the city with his friends, who were all photographers. Being surrounded by peers with cameras, I inevitably got my own too.

If I may, I would also love to thank the many other photographers and artists who allowed me to learn from and be inspired by them, as well as the clients who trust me and return, if not introduce new clients to me. Last but not least, my friends, who continuously support, encourage, and are willing to constructively criticize me—what seemed like small actions to them allowed me to take bigger steps forward.
