We had the good fortune of connecting with Isabella Janovick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Isabella, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked as a Senior Level Marketing Director in the corporate world for many years and decided to get my Masters in Business Administration to climb up the corporate ladder. During my time in grad school, my eyes were opened to the Entrepreneur life. When I graduated, I decided to launch my own marketing and communication company, Janovick Communications, instead of going back to corporate. I wanted more flexibility with my career, be my own boss and have time to travel and run whenever I wanted to. (Trail running is my passion).

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When I first launched my business, it was based on a need and pain point that I recognized in my local community. Small businesses knew how important social media was, but they didn’t have the resources or budget to hire a full-time social media manager. With Janovick Communications, they were able to hire myself, a freelance social media marketer who could work part-time within their monthly budget and no overhead. At first I took in clients from all industries, but after a few years of growth, networking and building my brand, I was able to narrow my niche of clients to those in the running industry, which again is my number one passion.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have several different groups of friends, but if it was a running friend from out of state, I would first take them to all my favorite group runs – Ultrabuds on Saturday mornings, ERS Double Peak run at Double Peak Brewery on Tuesday nights, Crackheads run in Carlsbad on Thursday Morning and the SixRun9 run at the Star of India on Friday mornings. The rest of the time would be spent on some of my favorite trails in Blue Sky Reserve, Mission Trails, Penasquitos Canyon, Lake Calavera, Daley Ranch and Elfin Forest. To drink and eat we would hit up Swamis, Islands, Twin Oaks Valley Winery, Belching Beaver, Orfilla Winery, Fish 101 and Board and Brew.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Former Dean Jim Hammerly, College of Business Administration at California State University San Marcos. His workshop on Entrepreneurship is what inspired me to start my own business. Soon after graduation, he hired me as an Adjunct Professor at CSUSM to teach Social Media Marketing and Personal Branding part-time.
