We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Greenwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heidi, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At Esquina, we’re passionate about creating a meaningful impact and championing sustainability. Our “Tote Bag of Wine for a Good Cause” initiative exemplifies this ethos as we partner with local nonprofits, directing 100% of the profits to support their impactful work in our community.

Not stopping there, we’re dedicated to nurturing the environment by donating a portion of our sales to Tree San Diego. Their mission, to enrich the urban landscape of San Diego County, resonates with our commitment to a greener, more vibrant future.

What sets us apart is our unique approach to wine – we prioritize eco-friendly wine formats. Whether it’s lightweight glass, boxed, canned, or pouched wines, we’re challenging the status quo, believing that quality wine should not be overshadowed by the environmental footprint of its packaging. It’s a revolution in wine that we are proud to uphold!

What should our readers know about your business?
At Esquina, our focus is on eco-friendly boxed and canned wines which makes us unique. However, changing people’s minds about boxed and canned wine is quite a challenge but we are excited to challenge the traditional wine scene and get people to enjoy their everyday wine differently!

Our journey wasn’t easy, to say the least. Online retail is highly competitive and dominated by big-box retail options. I’ve also had to deal with imposter syndrome, but I’ve learned to believe in my skills and keep learning.

Esquina’s story revolves around providing great wine that’s good for the planet. We want the world to know that we’re on a mission to make eco-conscious wine choices a no-brainer.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting five sommeliers from London, Milan, and Paris. Here’s a rundown of our itinerary. We started with burgers and tots at The Station in South Park, followed by some afternoon wine at Clos Wine Shop. Later that evening, we had a taco and mezcal dinner at Cantina Mayahuel. The next day, we headed to Tijuana for some delicious birria tacos for breakfast at Tacos Fit, went shopping at Mercado Hidalgo, and then enjoyed some cocktails at Aruba Day Drink Bar and stopped at our favorite spot, Dandy Del Sur! Finally, we spent our last day together on a sailboat ride around San Diego Bay!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am genuinely grateful for Jesse Zmuda of Backbone Floral, who has been a rock of support throughout our journey. Melissa Saunders of Communal Brands is a true inspiration for promoting sustainable wine packaging, and her unwavering dedication to this cause is truly admirable. Juerie Parks Masters’s positive attitude towards building meaningful partnerships has made a significant impact. These incredible individuals have been a vital part of Esquina’s journey, and we couldn’t have made it without their exceptional support.
