Meet Gordon Downs | Comedian & Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gordon Downs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gordon, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Open mics are a painful but very necessary to get started.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was a music journalist from the year 2000 until 2007. I also served as the editor for Modern Fix Magazine based out of San Diego, and was Co-Publisher of Impose Magazine out of New York City. I’ve been doing stand-up comedy since 2005 and am a member of the Writer’s Guild of America (West.) I’ve written for several TV shows including Comedy Central’s Roast Battle and Freeform TV’s, Truth & Iliza. I’m currently working on a project exploring the lack of merchandise for the animated TV show, American Dad! If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First we would go by Wellgreens in Lemon Grove before 9:00AM for the early bird special. Lunch at DZ Akins, dinner at Flippi’s (Pacific Beach or Mission Gorge locations) Hit up The Comedy Store in La Jolla, and the Rabbit Hole in Normal Heights for a night cap. There would hopefully be a good band playing at The Casbah or Observatory. Maybe hit up the Comic Con Museum? I haven’t been there yet.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be alive today without The Comedy Store (La Jolla location.) It’s the best comedy club in San Diego and some say it’s the perfect room for stand-up comedy. I started there in 2005 and was fortunate enough to work there as a door guy for a few years. RIP Mitzi Shore.
