Meet Ginger Cleland | Owner & Buyer of Antique & Vintage Jewelry

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ginger Cleland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ginger, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Over the 36 years I’ve been in business, my strong work ethic, diligence, and persistence have been key. If you face struggles, have faith that it’s just temporary and work through it on a daily basis. Building trust with my customers by being honest has been incredibly important to creating a fine jewelry store, and I’m very grateful.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is I married an artist who fabricates various works of art in precious metals. It has been a learning opportunity over the years to sit beside him at the bench, and observe how gold and silver can be forged to create everything from rings to pendants. I’m proud that my business has survived unforeseen economic changes. It’s been a journey! And no, it wasn’t easy. As a small business owner, I managed the store and raised two young men (who became Eagle Scouts!), always trying to strike the right balance between work and family. My hope is that Designs In Gold introduces a new generation to antique and vintage jewelry, its rich history, and superb craftsmanship.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Santa Ynez Valley is comprised of charming little towns, each with a personality of their own!
Solvang was settled over a century ago by Danish travelers, and was just voted one of the best small towns in the west by USA Today readers. Stop by Good Seed for a latte, Mortensen’s for a flaky pastry, and Peasant’s Deli or Panino for the best sandwich you’ve ever had! Catch some live music at The Lost Chord, and enjoy a luxurious stay at The Landsby or Hotel Corque.
Santa Ynez is a township reminiscent of the old west, boasting some of the best restaurants in the valley: Brothers at Red Barn, S.Y. Kitchen, and Ellie’s, just to name a few. Don’t miss out on shopping for turquoise jewelry at Charlotte’s, and dancing the night away to the tunes of great country bands at Maverick Saloon.
Los Olivos has a darling, country-town feel, and is dotted with numerous wine-tasting rooms; Dragonette, Story of Soil, and Liquid Farm are a few favorites. Just a brief drive out on Foxen Canyon Road you will find many gorgeous vineyards to visit with fantastic varietals to try. If it’s beer you enjoy, Figueroa Mountain Brewery offers a great selection and a lovely space in which to imbibe. For the garden enthusiasts, a trip to J. Woeste is in order.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve always been inspired by Suzanne Martinez of Lang Antiques, who is a renowned jewelry historian and curator of antique jewelry.
