Meet Garrett Lansdown | Marketing Agency Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Lansdown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted the freedom to live the life I wanted to live, while also doing something I am passionate about. I was tired of working a 9-5, or in my case, a 7-5, and wanted to be free and live by the beach while making enough money to do the things i love!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a creative videographer/photographer turned Media Marketing Specialist. What sets me apart is that I don’t just make nice videos and send them to the client, only to never speak to them again. I work on maintaining a relationship with them as i show them the value of consistent content that can turn into real results for their business. You can’t maintain valuable clients if you have no way of proving that your content is giving them a return on their investment.
Getting where I am today was a massive struggle. It was frightening, it was defeating, but it has so far been the most rewarding thing i have ever done for myself. The key is to keep pushing through the hard times and not getting discouraged by other people being better than you. There will always be someone better than you. It’s about standing out as an individual and having good relationships with people that will get you more clients. You don’t have to be the next Martin Scorsese to make and sell videos for social media. But you do need to be kind, respectful, and confident. Remember, you are replaceable. How can you make yourself irreplaceable?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friends were visiting the city, i’d give them the most diverse experience of San Diego as possible, because that’s what this city is, diverse! I’d start by taking them to the beach in Mission Beach to give them that classic San Diego feel. Then i’d take them to the Gaslamp District for some day times, food, and drinks during the day . Then, i’d take them to a good sunset view at Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla. Then i’d show them around the Ocean Beach Farmers Market and Drum Circle,. I’d probably end their trip at the San Diego Zoo just so they can experience the finest zoo in the US!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a huge shoutout to my first ever job in the industry, Camplife Customs. Camplife Customs is a luxury van conversion company in San Diego. Before I knew that I was even going to start my business, Camplife Customs gave me a shot at creating content for them based on only ONE cinematic drone YouTube video I made a few years prior. They believed in me from the beginning and have helped me rise to the place I am in now. What started as a low paying GIG doing social media videos for them on my phone as a freelancer, has turned into my first high paying retainer CLIENT where I am now using professional camera gear with and doing much more than social media videos. This taught me the value of strong relationship building and networking. The skills I learned in my first gig with them where I worked on their website landed me another professional contract with a larger company as the website designer and manager.
