We had the good fortune of connecting with Ficus Elastica and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ficus, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by both of my children. They are everything to me and when I started making music, I noticed a huge difference in contrast of my motivation to express myself was much different and more powerful with having my children in mind. I’m also inspired by the evolution of rhythm and blues evolving into hip-hop culture and how that has affected the vibe within my music. I’m inspired by the San Diego environment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been making music for more than 20 years and I’ve been releasing albums online for the last 8 years. I’m very proud about putting my spin on R&B and Hip-Hop instrumentals. My primary motivation has to make calming and relaxing music while trying not to fit into any specific box or category. I don’t try to follow any trends I just try to trailblaze wherever I go with my music. The biggest challenges I have come across is being on the autistic spectrum. I understand that it is becoming more common for people to self-diagnose and have symptoms but when I was diagnosed at 8 years old it was a 1 in 10,000 chance that someone would be on the Spectrum and it made me feel unique but like the odd man out. I overcame my challenges charge through music therapy. Either listening to music or making it seem to make me feel like I was one with the Earth. Instead of feeling like I was from a different planet I felt a sense of being a part of a universal experience. I lived in Massachusetts for over 30 years and now I have been in San Diego California for a little over 10 years now. I’ve learned so much since I’ve moved here. I’ve learned to take things slow and to appreciate the presence more and more everyday. It’s good to look back on the past for nostalgia and it’s good to prepare for the future but right now is the most important time you’ll ever have.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The perfect day in San Diego would be going to the water park or the beach sometime in the morning Then before the end of the day when the Sun goes down going to sunset cliffs.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my children first and foremost. Shout out to my best friend Barbara. Thank you to all of the people that have supported my music throughout the years. Thank you to Distrokid and Bandcamp for hosting my music.
