Meet Fatai Veamatahau | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Fatai Veamatahau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fatai, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve sung from a very young age and I always knew I’d pursue music but it definitely happened a lot earlier than expected. I left school at 13, studied music for some years, was scouted for a TV show, got signed, moved interstate, went viral online, moved international, wrote, recorded and toured for many years and now I’m getting ready to release new music at the ripe old age of 30. The question I often ask myself is why do I STILL want to pursue music now? I love it! I’m good at it! I have a wellspring of songs left in me to share. even after a fun career so far, It very much feels like I’m only getting started!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always believed that my message to the world through music is to remind someone of their worth and value! If only one knew fully they are created with love and purposed for great things, maybe they could navigate the challenges of life more confidently and with an assurance of who they are!
It’s easy to forget why you loved music in the first place when you are monetizing your craft. It also takes time to feel a sense of freedom in your artistry in such a fast consumer world like the music industry. After almost 15 years of working in this profession, I’m most excited about writing, recording and releasing music that feels most effortless and honest right now! I no longer feel the urge to compromise my sound or sanity to please others. I’m enjoying being in the studio and writing from the real and raw human experience.
I’ve learnt that in order to pursue music as a full time career, it’s a combination of a few things. Two ingredients that stand out to me in my career right now, is a lot of hard work and self belief! No one is going to back you and your music until you have backed yourself. Especially for us independant artists and sometimes even signed artists. You want something to happen? don’t wait for anyone to hand it to you. You make it happen!
I’m just a Tongan/Aussie woman from Melbourne, Australia that has a voice and platform to spread love and encourage others through song.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a foodie at heart, Nothing quite speaks as profoundly as FOOD does! Another Melbourne trait of mine is being a coffee snob. It’s a full day and week of cafes and coffee hunting through the cities best. The rest of the week would most likely be spontaneous and free flowing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As we would say in the islands, Shout out to my village! My team and my loved ones! a large part of who I am today is the influence of those closest to me over my career.
