We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Mendelsohn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is imperative and unavoidable when starting a new company. As an entrepreneur, a major key to success is getting comfortable being uncomfortable. That said, you always want to ensure you are protected so that if the risk doesn’t pan out, you aren’t left with nothing.

In the case of launching Tipsy Elves, we made a point to test our business model before diving all in, head first. Many individuals jump to quitting their job, refinancing their home, and putting their family at risk by betting it all on an unproven idea. Sometimes it works out, but more often, people are left with a failed business and a mountain of debt. To curb this risk, I decided to test the Tipsy Elves concept while I was still working full time as a lawyer. This allowed me to ensure the business concept was successful before I quit my job and focused all of my efforts on Tipsy Elves. While the long days and nights were far from easy, it gave me the confidence to know that the risk I was taking had a good probability of success. There will always be unknowns in the business world, but through preparation, research and due diligence, you can minimize your risk and set yourself up for success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Starting a new business is never easy, but if you surround yourself with the right people, it makes overcoming the challenges all the more worth it. The company and culture we have created continues to grow every year and we are so excited to see how far we can take Tipsy Elves. What started as an idea and a side-hustle has turned into a household name in holiday apparel and fun, outrageous clothing. The joy that we are able to help cultivate on days of celebration with our apparel will always be one of the most rewarding parts of our job.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would have to start the day with breakfast/brunch at one of my favorite spots, Morning Glory. This would include several of their world renowned bloody mary’s! Next up, we’d catch the Ferry to Coronado and bike around to see all the sights. This would be followed up with some quality beach time and would finish off with dinner at, (arguably the best Italian restaurant in town), Seneca!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my business partner and Co-CEO Nick Morton — we’ve had a lot of ups and downs with our business and he’s been a great friend and partner through it all. It would have been a lot more daunting navigating some of our business challenges over the years alone, but thankfully I had him by my side every step of the way.
