Meet Elan Pasmanick | Owner of Born To Repair LLC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elan Pasmanick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In high school I majored in programming and that’s what I thought I will be, a computer programmer. In the country I grew up it is mandatory to join the military after high school and during my service the 2000 high tech bubble burst. I remember a man being interviewed on the news for loosing his job. He looked old back then, but he was probably around the age I am today. He said: “who is going to hire me at my age?” Seance then I don’t feel secure in a traditional job. Being the boss feels more secure to me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I repair restoration equipment and teach how to repair restoration equipment. Restoration equipment is the equipment used by restoration companies to dry out properties that were damaged by water. When it breaks it is very expensive to repair because the repairs are done by a limited amount of shops that take too long and charge too much. They even replace expensive parts that in many cases can just be cleaned up and fixed. I decided to create a repairs services with a different business model that will give a better and cheaper experience to the owner of the equipment. Being a mobile technician allows me to repair on the spot in the owner’s warehouse. This makes repair times quicker, and not paying rent for a shop, lets me charge less.
At first many restoration companies gave me a chance because the alternative options were all bad. Today I have a reputation for repairing faster for cheaper. Getting to this place required a lot of determination and patience. I quickly noticed that with my accent I can’t get any appointments so I had to go door to door and introduce myself. Opening my social media accounts helped me get noticed even better, but standing out was a challenge that also took time.
I got into this business when I was close to being 40 and it wasn’t my first business. Two decades of experience have helped me a lot to get me here. Running your own business is not for everyone. There are no participation trophies. You just have to put the time in, in many cases without compensation. Many don’t believe in your cause and you have to know how to deal with countless objections and rejections. Doing what you love will only become a good business if the demand for it exists and if you can find a way to plug yourself in between your competition and still stand out.
If you want to start a business, there’s a lot of work ahead of you. Good luck!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love taking outsiders to the children’s pool in La Jolla. Walking along the beach and watching the wildlife is unbelievable. I like the bicycle ride on the strand between Coronado and Imperial Beach and sometimes I even get to see a flamingo that I think escaped the zoo. Of course The San Diego Zoo, Lego Land and Sea World are amazing too for the ones with children, but can be a little too expensive for some guests.
My favorite local place to eat is Don Panchos in Impeller Beach, but my favorite food in San Diego is the food my wife cooks. If you taste it you won’t want to eat anywhere else.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The whole home restoration industry. They are my clients and my business is set up to serve them.
