We had the good fortune of connecting with Edgardo Becerra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi edgardo, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
As a soccer coach,my work doesn’t really have an end goal because it’s not about reaching a final destination—it’s about constant growth and evolution. The beauty of what I do lies in the process: improving my craft, adapting to new challenges, and helping others grow along the way. Whether I’m mentoring players, educating coaches, or building a stronger community, the focus is always on progress and finding new ways to elevate the game I love. For me, it’s not about finishing—it’s about continuing to evolve and make an impact.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work revolves around developing players in a way that goes beyond just teaching soccer—it’s about shaping them as individuals and giving them the tools to succeed both on and off the field. As the founder of 1991 Total Football Academy, my goal has always been to bridge the gap between world-class player development and accessibility, ensuring that talent and hard work—not financial privilege—determine a player’s opportunities.

What sets 1991 apart is our direct connection to elite coaching, particularly through our partnerships with the Argentinian National Team staff. We’re not just providing training; we’re implementing a methodology proven at the highest levels of the game. That’s something very few academies in the U.S. can offer. I’ve also been fortunate to work with players who have gone on to achieve national championships and international recognition, like Samantha Weiss, who became Argentina’s standout player at the Women’s World Cup. Those moments reaffirm that the work we do has a real impact.

Getting to where I am today was far from easy. I didn’t grow up with resources or a clear path in soccer. I came from a background where opportunities were scarce, and I had to fight for every step forward. When I was 16, my coach, Forest Brazil, gave me my first coaching role while I was still playing, making me see the game differently and believe in my ability to lead. But I had to build my reputation, gain trust, and prove myself over and over again. There were moments when I had nothing, but my commitment to the game and to my players kept me going.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that true coaching isn’t about drills or tactics—it’s about genuinely caring for your players as people. If they trust you and know you believe in them, they will grow beyond what even they thought possible.

What I want the world to know about 1991 Total Football Academy is that we are here to redefine player development. We are proving that elite training can exist outside the traditional pay-to-play system. We are showing that the right education, the right mentorship, and the right opportunities can change lives.

And for me, coaching isn’t just a profession—it’s a long-term endeavor. This is my life’s work. I am committed to building something that will outlast me, creating a system where players from any background have access to the highest level of development. Soccer changed my life, and through 1991, I want to do the same for others

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
wouldn’t be where I am today without the people who shaped me along the way. As a child, I was fortunate to have a coach, Forest Brazil, who took me under his wing. He didn’t just train me—he gave me a job, taught me discipline, and, most importantly, made me believe in myself. At 16, while I was still playing soccer, he lit the torch that started my journey, pushing me to see the game from a broader perspective and understand that I had more to offer beyond just being a player. I owe everything to him.

Beyond that, my journey has been built on the shoulders of incredible coaches, mentors, and players I’ve had the privilege to work with, both in the U.S. and Argentina. The Argentinian coaching staff such as Christian Meloni and Clarissa Huber., from the Argentinian national team, these coaches have been instrumental in shaping my approach to player development. Their trust and collaboration have allowed me to bring world-class methodologies into my work, particularly through 1991 Total Football Academy.

I also have to acknowledge the players—those I’ve coached from the grassroots to the professional level. Their dedication, resilience, and trust in the process inspire me every day. The success of 1991 is as much theirs as it is mine. And, of course, my family, who have supported my passion through every step, even when the road wasn’t always clear.
Quinn Segger, Jax Segger, Damien Vang, Evan De La Rosa , Edwin Lopez & Samantha Weiss whom I had the pleasure to train before her debut as a World Cup player for Argentina.

But beyond all the training, tactics, and development, what truly matters is showing players that you genuinely care—not just about their growth as athletes, but as people. That’s the foundation of everything I do. Success in coaching isn’t an individual achievement—it’s the result of the right people believing in you, challenging you, and walking the journey alongside you. I’m grateful for everyone who’s been part of that.
