Meet Dr. Charles Benjamin Warter | CEO & Co-Founder of Protected Roots Integrative Treatment Center

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Charles Benjamin Warter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Charles Benjamin, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
This is a particularly good question, and the mental health industry, as a whole, takes a great deal of time, effort, supervision, and dedication to commit to helping others and your community. Often, there are “practitioners“who don’t have the guidance and knowledge to provide effective and evidence-based interventions. I think it’s essential for caregivers and families to always look for any institutions that are crediting certifications or licensing to support their decision-making.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Protected Roots Integrative (PRI) Treatment Center is a Joint Commission-accredited and DHCS-certified mental health facility in San Diego. PRI supports adolescents, young adults, and their families in achieving sustained mental health recovery and wellness by integrating academic medicine with community values. Our all-gender facility offers in-person and virtual intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient (OP) treatment services. While we offer programs for young adults ages 18-35, PRI’s primary focus is working with adolescents aged 12-17 who have struggled with behavioral and emotional concerns throughout their adolescence. Our programs are structured for patients with mood disorders, behavioral problems, executive dysfunction, suicidality, or substance use. They are designed to assist patients and their families in learning and gain new tools to increase functioning by addressing their conflicts and supporting them in achieving a fully independent and self-supporting lifestyle. provide a multi-phasic approach to our intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) for youths. PRI’s values are rooted in inclusivity/multiculturalism as core tenets for mental health. Reaching these services has been arduous and complex, although the reward of supporting as many people as humanly possible has been beyond beneficial. We are grateful to community leaders and other practitioners in the broader San Diego area who helped us develop our program.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Simply surfing the OB break (as I’m a colossal Fish surfer), the taco stand, and Tanuki Sushi in Kensington. We live in a mecca for golf; I particularly love Mission Trails and the Riverwalk driving range.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Frankly, there’s not one specific person I can shout out to, but rather, a community of individual members who have helped shape my career and continue to support the progress of our clinic. I would particularly like to think of institutions such as the University of Southern California, UCSF, and other training sites where I received ongoing supervision and support to help inform best practices in our clinic.
