We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Destiny, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I believe that having a strong work ethic is the foundation of success. I realized that all the amazing artists that I have watched when I was younger and still watch, are devoted to their craft and they work extremely hard to reach their goals. Talent is essential but work ethic definitely overpowers talent, and I think that being blessed with a talent means that as artists we should take the responsibility of working hard to develop our talents.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a vocalist and a songwriter. I have been singing since I was three years old and I am excited about releasing new music. Last year I focused on performing on The Voice and The Berklee Beyoncé Ensemble and this year I am focusing on writing and producing music. I really enjoy the writing process, because I am able to be as vulnerable as I want and truly find who I am as an artist. I have a lot of growing to do with my writing and I am still learning a lot about mixing vocals at Berklee but I am excited to get comfortable with being full hands on with my music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am currently in Boston, because I attend Berklee College of Music, but I am originally from San Diego, CA . If my friend is in Boston, I will definitely show them my school, introduce them to some musician friends and show them the Boston Public Garden. In the spring, it is beautiful because there is a lot of greenery and statues. f they were to visit San Diego, I would start off by taking them to Barrio Logan to get the best authentic Mexican food, and show them the beautiful art and murals that they have at Chicano Park. I would also take them to Coronado Island. The beach is so beautiful and the weather is always nice. The famous Hotel Dell is also a great place to visit because of the history and it being a backdrop for Marilyn Monroe’s movie Some Like It hot.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so inspired by everyone. I really pay close attention to the greats like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, etc. when it comes to their vocal technique. Growing up I couldn’t afford lessons so I would consider them as my first coaches that helped me find my own sound. As for the person who inspires me in my daily life, my mom is the hardest worker I know and teaches me to stay consistent and dedicated. She is always motivating me to keep going and continue to reach higher. I have also learned many performance techniques from the school that I attend, Berklee College of Music. I think it is extremely important to be an educated artist. At times I get frustrated with homework and tests but I have to pull myself back and realize that this is all going to set me up for success in the long run.
