Meet Derek Larson | Winyl club

We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Larson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derek, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Consistency is king. We try to be as consistent as we can when the Winyl club season is going on. If we are out there every week people get familiar with the vibe and it becomes a staple of their week. They understand that they can go to the park and escape in the middle of the week every Wednesday. Consistency is also a way for the community to grow with us and feel like they are apart of the changes. It is fun seeing the same people every week and growing to know them and what our club brings to their life. We are a club so being out there every week allows our club members a chance to know our core members and djs that preform each week. Our core members would be the people who are consistently there and contributing in the overall event that is happening. We have a lot of djs who are our core members but we also have vendors and artist who are considered core members of the club. With all of the core members of the club working together consistently whether it being making the flyers and advertisements or popping up and vending for the community, we can achieve a comfortable vibe for people to come out often and share the experience with new friends. Being consistent allows the growth of the club to be organic. Overall being out in the park every Wednesday is considered our weekly club meeting and the meetings are mandatory.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Honestly when this started it was just because my friends and I were nerds about the stuff we liked. To me this is just another level of what I have been interested in my whole life. Culture is something I have been consumed with. With Winyl club I can curate all my favorite parts of culture and turn it into a weekly event for people to enjoy. All the elements of Winyl club are my favorite things that are all an art form in themselves. We bring you djs with amazing music taste and pair it with organic wine. Any given week will be vendors with some of the best food that San Diego has to offer. You may also find some of the best local brands popping up and selling their art in any medium you can think of. We also have artists who bring the look of everything and give Winyl club a life of its own. All of these elements and people that participate all found their way to the park and it was something that seemed to happen organically. We have had speed bumps along the way but I think as long as we can stay true to our objective of presenting our art to a community any challenge will fade away as the club grows. We are here to share taste and art that will grow culture and allow people to expanded their mind and gain more cultural currency.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off Winyl club is the only thing to do on Wednesdays during the day. Morley field is a beautiful park in the heart of north park. You can find a vibe that is safe and something you won’t forget. I would just suggest exploring our beautiful city. Winyl club is born in San Diego and certainly wants to celebrate its beauty and anything it has to offer.
