We had the good fortune of connecting with DaZM and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DaZM, what do you attribute your success to?
Having been born into the music scene in the UK, my passion for house music began when I listened to BBC Radio 1. Back in the 90’s the radio was really the only source to listen to this music and I was often glued to the radio on the weekends, recording DJ shows with cassette.

My brother introduced me to DJing when I was 12 on some old technics turntables. I would search for records in my local town and travel to London to grab the latest releases. The internet soon made this process easier and I still recall the excitement of a new record or two being delivered to my door. Back then, all I could afford was a coupe of records a month so to say I over played some of these would be an understatement!

Together with my friends we would travel the country seeking our favourite DJ’s and frequented Ibiza, which was and still remains to be, the house music hub.

Having grown up knowing exactly what it feels like to be on the dance floor, I soon created my own sound which was as much about the crowd than it was me. I always had a philosophy that if I was dancing in my bedroom to a certain track, it was a sure thing I could get the crowd moving too.

I believe the key to my success is I have always strived to show my music to those who know it, those who know it but have no where to dance to it and the feedback I get from people who haven’t yet heard but now have a love for my music. I have found house music to be met with some negative views and I have always ensured this music is for the people and the smiles I see is often all I need to know I’m doing it right.

Hard work! It’s really what it comes down to. Learning the craft of DJIng is key and to enjoy that process. Making mixes in my bedroom, playing at small friends parties and often alone in my bedroom for years. It was simply the music that provided me with all I needed. It was theuraputic and I sure had a continue to have a vivid imagination when DJing alone, a pigeon on my deck was all I needed as an audience at one point!

From bedroom DJ to playing. in clubs and bars was a very long process which required a lot of networking and is still a huge part of this industry. Ive been turned down by many promoters and clubs over the years and at first this hurts but you soon build up a resilience and understand that hardworking and patience is key, to never give up and have confidence in what I do.

I never set out to be an international superstar DJ and I’ve remained humble throughout. It is very easy to get carried away with the need to be recognised and admired but being confident in my work I have reached a stage where I am lucky enough to be invited to events based on my unique sound.

In front of a crowd or home alone, its the music that drives me and my only goal is to bring smiles to people as having that ability is priceless.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living on Vancouver Island, I proudly call this paradise. The tranquil wilderness here is something all should see, the waterfalls, forests, mountains and slower pace of life needs no marketing. I am fortunate enough to be able to ski and surf in the same day here and anyone that visits here I am very proud to introduce them to all, ensuring they are ready for adventure!

Being a short ferry ride to Vancouver City, I am a big fan of asian cuisine and Banana Leaf, incredible Malaysian that hits the spot every time.

From a cable car up the spectacular Grouse Mountain, with views over the whole city to sipping a cold drink in many of the incredible bars and restaurants in Vancouver, anyone is spoilt for choice.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Growing up my idol was an Irish DJ Fergie. From listening to him on the radio to trying my upmost to catch his shows where and when I could. He had no idea of the influence he had on me, his music and story to this day inspire me.

After all these years I was finally able to connect with him and show him my gratitude. The man remains so humble and his story alone is very unique!

My parents played a huge part in my success, from my dad setting up my DJ studio in our home in the UK when I was 12 and simply tolerating the very loud learning curve coming from upstairs!

Finally none of what I do now could have been achieved without the support of my wife. She has always supported me from the start, and lets say there are stresses that come with this line of work. She will come to all my shows and just knowing she is there is support that I never take for granted.
