Meet Dawn Myers | Human Resource Consultant & Business Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After a long and successful career in hospitality human resources, I moved to a large employer organization to work as a consultant. I worked with over 80 small business owners and leaders to help them develop workforce strategies, policies, and procedures.
Covid shut everything down, five months into my new job, and employers were terrified. I set up a home office and began educating myself and guiding my clients through the crisis. Every day brought new challenges and opportunities, and I was completely in my element!
As time went on and we became accustomed to our new normal, I realized that my clients required far more attention than I was able to give them (having so many). It was at that point, a colleague reached out to me with the concept of launching our own business to provide business owners with not just what they wanted, but what they needed. It was more than a conversation; it was a calling that we knew we had to answer.
We understood that owning a business can be lonely and overwhelming, but factor in California employment laws and it becomes daunting. In fact, according to the Small Business Administration, more than half of new employer businesses fail within the first five years. We intend to crush that percentage!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our company was founded on the desire to help business owners rediscover why they originally started their company and to lay the groundwork for them to enjoy what they do, rather than being consumed by the day-to-day. We are committed to delivering peace of mind to owners and leaders by serving as trusted advisors and providing the systems and processes required to stay in compliance with federal, state, and local employment law.
Guided Leadership Solutions looks very different today than when we launched (almost two years ago) but our goal has remained the same and has grown due to the relationships we have built. Starting a business requires determination and we have been determined to get a little further in our journey each day. We understand that we learn best by doing, therefore with each new client, we have improved our ability to provide the best solutions for them as well as internal procedures for us.
We are proud of the work we do and the clients we’ve partnered with are thriving. We have expanded our services to be able to provide on-call expert employment advice and resources to professional service firms (5-50 employees). From HR Advisory to Total HR solutions, we now offer a range of services to meet the needs of each individual employer.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A dream San Diego vacation with friends would start with a stay at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club having brunch at the Marine Room to watch the tide as it hits the large windows surrounding the restaurant. I would reach out to my friends Mark and Darlynne Menkin at Where You Want to Be Tours – https://wheretours.com/ and schedule a scavenger hunt through Old Town and enjoy the famous homemade flour tortillas at Old Town Mexican Cafe. Our final destination would be at the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter (of course) where we could walk to Seaport Village, Petco Park to watch a ballgame, and indulge at the many eateries in the Gaslamp Quarter. I would be sure that we watched the sunset from Altitude Sky Lounge with a couple of cool cocktails in hand.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize Jim Durbin, my general manager and mentor of 15 years who has remained my dear friend since I worked for him at the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter. He believed in me before I believed in myself and called me a partner. He included me in all aspects of running our hotel and did not limit me in any way. He gave me the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. He has had a significant impact on my life and career.
