We had the good fortune of connecting with David Garcia and Anthony Salamoneand we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David and Anthony, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
For us, success is defined by architectural audacity. Our process demands embracing risks and navigating through failure along the way. How much risk is contingent on our clients’ ambition. Our goal is to challenge convention and allow the best solution to emerge. It is always a challenge to let go of preconceived notions, but the unexpected results are profoundly rewarding for everyone involved.

We also measure our success through delight. Our joy and passion for what we do continues to move us forward.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our practice materialized through conversations between two friends with a shared interest in Architecture. We were both driven by the desire to establish an architectural practice and shoulder all its intricate responsibilities: design, operations, marketing, admin, and direct engagement with clients. We landed on the name MISCELLANEOUS because we would rather be defined as a collective of ideas rather than two names on a door. It is our belief that the best ideas result from the collective, regardless of position and experience. Every client is actively involved in the design process from the beginning.

Recently, it has become evident within our communities that the discipline has lost its ability to imagine, whether through AI or the catastrophic acceptance of complacency. We started this practice with the unwavering commitment to approach each project with the spirit of play and imagination in order to captivate the general public.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week with MISCELLANEOUS? We have a three day max for visitors. Too many deadlines. We’re kidding but in all seriousness, they would most likely ask us not to bore them with an architectural tour of the Salk Institute. We would drive them from the airport straight to Hayes Burgers in our neighborhood of Barrio Logan. It’s the best burger in San Diego. We don’t say that lightly because we know how territorial San Diegans can be about their burgers.

We would carve out some time to immerse ourselves in nature by hiking the many trails San Diego has to offer. A favorite is Corte Madera AKA San Diego’s Mini Half Dome in the Cleveland National Forest. It can be a little difficult to navigate to the trailhead from the freeway, but that usually means you won’t find a soul on the trail.

Lastly, it wouldn’t be a San Diego trip without going to the beach. Whether it’s for volleyball, spike ball, or to surf, visiting the ocean is always a good reset.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We wouldn’t be where we are today without the mentorship support of the creatives that surround us. There are probably too many people to list but we will try our best to name a few: Hector Perez, Catherine Herbst, Patrick Shields, Marcel Sanchez, Jose Parral, Philipp Bosshart, Goyo Ortiz, Daniela Deutsch, Casey Mahon and, our former bosses Randy Hanna and Joe Mansfield.

Of course, our family and friends! The support we’ve received from everyone has just been overwhelming. We are so grateful for our community.
