We had the good fortune of connecting with David Crabtree and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Can you imagine talking to your doctor about all of your health concerns in under 15 minutes? Unfortunately, this is the health care system of today. Doctors are often rushed, though patients are always complex. What do we do?
Working at an urban academic medical center, I found myself conflicted about not being able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Too little time, too many patients, not enough resources. Meanwhile, individual patients suffer.
Ultimately, I decided to pursue private practice. Though scary to be entirely on your own, I find that I am better able to connect with patients and provide more effective and quality care.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have my own private medical practice. I primarily specialize in the evaluation and treatment of drug/alcohol addiction and common mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. I’m most proud that this venture is run entirely by me. When patients contact my practice, they hear back from the doctor directly – and usually that same day! Those who need appointments can often be accommodated in my practice, usually within 24-48 hours. The larger clinics and hospitals may tell you there is a waitlist of 1 or 2 months! Can your drug/alcohol problem or depression wait that long?
Launching this practice has been a fun learning experience. Doctors receive no training whatsoever in the business of medicine, but I have learned a lot along the way. Patience, persistence, and perseverance are key.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Beach: Black’s Beach or Coronado Dog Beach Park: Balboa Park
Coffee: James Coffee Company.
Sunset: Sunset Cliffs
Food: We will have to eat a lot of Mexican food, but definitely can’t forget the Hillcrest and Little Italy Farmers Market so we can prepare a homemade meal.
Dessert: a short drive to El Cajon to grab some Yogurt Mill. Or, what about Baby Cakes?!
Weekend brunch: Snooze!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Locally, Dr. Linda Hill with UCSD was my residency program director and supported and encouraged me along the way.
