Meet Darien Martus | Recording Artist, Do It Records/Sony

We had the good fortune of connecting with Darien Martus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darien, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Born, raised a couple miles outside of Detroit. Originally a semi-rural area that was later developed. Lots of tree climbing. Walking through fields picking wild berries. Loved solitude in nature. Still do. So much. Now live in a small cabin in the forest in the mountains of Southern California. My songwriting happens exclusively in this place. The quiet. The trees. The seasons.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a recording artist signed to Do It Records/Sony. I signed my deal with them at the age of 69, just 2 years ago. My life has always been Music. Was playing the organ in church and being paid at age 10. BA and Masters in music. Worked in music both in Detroit and Los Angeles in theatre, films, TV. Have had 20 of my original musicals produced. Received the Bay Area Drama Critics Award for Best Original Score. Was the choir director at Palm Springs High School for many years. Retired to record and release my original music. Yes it has often been extremely difficult to live my own life in music but I’m sure it would have been much harder not to. I would say the thing I’ve been most consistent in overcoming challenges is that I don’t give up. If someone turns me down, that’s them turning me down. If I give up because they turned my down, that’s me turning me down.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Idyllwild. My home. My town in the mountains. A hike on Devil’s Slide. Then Leucadia. My favorite beach town. Walk on the beach. Lunch in Encinitas. DTLA. Disney Hall for The LA Philharmonic. LA Opera next door. Lunch at Grand Central Market. Disneyland. 😊
