We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danielle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As we know, time has taught us that Health Care is a critical piece of any thriving society. When we consider how important this is to the United States, we see that our government spends at least 15% of the nation’s budget on the health of the people. However it is the quality of Health Care that remains an evolving challenge. Launching Innovative Wellness Clinic, Inc. A Nursing Corporation (IWC) was our way to do our part to help this critical and evolving challenge in the industry of Health Care.

While spending years working in the field as a nurse and patient advocate, it became obvious that healthcare can be a bit challenging, especially for those individuals and families living in the underserved community, These challenges range from obtaining health insurance to finding a quality and trustworthy health care provider. From the start, our vision has been for IWC to be structured in a way to help meet the demand for the overall quality of care, primary care shortage, and to ensure that ALL patients are able to access quality health care regardless of their insurance status.

As the CEO, my body of work in health care since 2006 started as a medical assistant and eventually led me on a journey to initiate studies at Georgetown University where I graduated and became a certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Having seen health care done many different ways from private practice to corporate medicine, gratitude is what comes to mind having had a very unique experience in seeing first hand the many successes and shortcomings as the provider, employee, and patient. We have all been a patient at some point, but these encounters have provided the insight and perspective into how I want my own patients to feel.

At IWC, our motto is “Providers Who Listen, Providers Who Care” because we simply desire to increase access to quality health care and improve individual health outcomes by addressing the root cause of our patient’s concerns. We work together with our patients as a team to come up with personalized solutions. Many of our patients appreciate being treated with compassion and individuality because health care shouldn’t be one size fits all; which in turn motivates healthy choices on their journey to optimal wellness.

What should our readers know about your business?
Innovative Wellness Clinic, Inc is a bit different than most corporate health care facilities in that our patients usually spend 30 minutes or more during health care visits to establish trust and address their concerns. This is a new concept as many of our patients have sought us out because they have felt ignored, dismissed, or rushed through an evaluation.

I am most proud of the fact that we offer different flexible payment models so that our patients can have access to quality health care. We are most excited about our membership option, which provides many insured and uninsured patients the opportunity to have VIP access with a reasonable monthly fee and unlimited visits. We also provide weekend appointments as busy patients may have difficulty prioritizing their health during the typical Monday through Friday work week.

Getting to where we are today was definitely due to the support of friends and family. As a mother of 2 small children, my husband and I definitely rely on one another to help with time management.

Running a business is definitely challenging, but during difficult times, we try to focus on the goal of improved wellness of our patients. I would say the biggest lesson is despite how challenging things become, always provide top tier communication and customer service.

We want the world to know that we value each patient and empathize with the positive and negative experiences when interacting with the health care industry. I was actually hospitalized this year and had a traumatic experience. It reminded me why IWC is here to provide an alternative to frustrations experienced by patients due to the health care system.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most of our activities are child friendly and include places like the zoo, museums, carousals, and beaches. Hanging out is time spent with family, usually taking our children to the playground. Then we typically go home to make our favorite meals or eat out at our favorite organic spots. One of our must visit spots are farmers markets and food festivals with our favorite vegan food truck, Today’s Menu Vegan Eatery.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, God, because without God, there would be no desire or skills to be able to make a difference in the lives of our patience.

My mother, Beverly Buford, who is an all around amazing human being. Not only is she a great mother and grandmother, but she has been gifted with the ability to be an amazing support system who exudes compassion.

Last, but certainly not least, Dr. Suzanne Afflalo. She is the epitome of magic and I’m forever indebted to her for the mentorship and example as another female health care provider. When I told her the thoughts behind Innovative Wellness Clinic, Inc, she motivated me to not only go for it, but that she was there to support. That was huge. She is a beacon in our community when it comes to the health of San Diego and I hope to be able to fill half the shoes that she currently does.
