We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Kelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christopher, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was one hundred percent motivated by wanting the freedom to pursue my music career at the highest level possible. I always had an entrepreneur spirit growing up from selling cds in high school and trading and bartering Pokémon cards and basketball cards. As I started to pursue music and build a career for myself, I begin to see that my freedom was limited to how many concerts and gigs I could do because I would have to work my 9-5 job.. The job eventually started to get in the way of me expanding my fan base and I started to turn down paying and promo gigs just to be at my job because I didn’t want to get fired. I met a mentor that showed me how to go into business for myself selling life insurance and teaching financial literacy. He showed me how to leave my job and be a full time entrepreneur to have the freedom to build my music career. In 90 days of him training me, what I was making in 40 hours in one week I begin to make in one hour working for myself. That’s when I knew, running a business was definitely for me!!!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My hip hop artist name is Boxx The Hungry Genius. I’m a rising rap star out of Baton Rouge, La. Success is truly a marathon and I can honestly say my pursuit of this thing called music has blessed me with the opportunity to wear many hats to keep my dream alive! I’ve been writing music since I was 13 years old, signed my first indie record deal at 17 and I began artist development as I built a fan base and carved out a lane for myself. I’ve worked over 47 jobs in my life just to keep the bills paid as well as money to reinvest in myself and my music career. I’ve been doing this professionally 19 years and its been a crazy long journey but so exciting at the same time because I’ve achieved so much!! This journey has never been easy but it’s been so worth it learning lessons in all the losses and turning each perceived failure into a victory. What sets me apart from everyone else is my dedication to studying my craft, business wise, and art wise and my top tier ability to rap with my lyrical word play. My great song making ability and live performances. Most importantly it’s the intangibles like my professionalism, how hands on I am in controlling my narrative from my name, image, and likeness, how I treat people, and how I lead as a rap artist. I’m excited about releasing my first album under my own label Hungry Boy Records this year and traveling around the world. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to BUILD RELATIONSHIPS! What I want the world to know about my brand and my story is that I’m a hustler that’s gifted in the dark, a misfit, an underdawg that has a way with words that will always get where I want by BETTING ON MYSELF!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The best places to visit in Baton Rouge are usually tucked in the mom and pop spots where you can get the best experience from. I would take them to my favorite daiquiri shop called Situla’s Ultra Lounge. Then directly across the street, I would treat them to a known soul food spot called Cafe Express. A few more dope spots I would bring them to throughout the week is Bennies night club on Monday, Tuesday would be the silly rabbit comedy club, Thursday Club Elite. We would go eat at famous restaurant Empire Wingz. Then I would take them to Henry Turner’s Listening Room to hear some nice live blues music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a huge shoutout to my business mentor/life coach Charles Harris III, I met him at a time in my life where I knew there was more in me and I had no guidance from a man. Charles taught me how to not only leave my job and work for myself in the financial services industry but he also taught me a valuable lesson about always sowing seeds in people. About always giving them the dollar and you taking the dime as a leader. Being patient with people throughout the process of building valuable relationships and loving on them despite their flaws. His rigid flexibility leadership style is something I adapted and use to this day when I’m leading people. Allowing people to make mistakes but still holding them accountable as you guide them to success. I learned through Charles that the biggest return on your investment will never be a mutual fund, an IRA, stocks or bonds. He taught me this biggest return on investment will always be when you invest in people!
