We had the good fortune of connecting with Christoph Key and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christoph, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business helps my community by offering quality services & a safe for people with Textured and Curly Hair. It’s typically very difficult finding someone who understands All textures of hair, and I definitely do. I noticed a need in my community, that I’m more than happy to fill. I’m known for being Energetic & my positive outlook on the world. As a recovered alcoholic, I believe it’s important to share the transparency of my full story.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an Artist Thru & Thru. My parents met in Arts school, and I attended Arts focused schools my entire life. One could say, it’s in my blood. I share my creativity in many forms and my 2 favorite ways are thru Hair & being a Musician. I currently own a private studio hair salon, located in Hillcrest. I specialize in knowledge of All textures & Curly hair. Being able to provide a much needed service to my community is extremely fulfilling. I’m a full service Salon equipped with two chairs, hanging glass mirror, and gorgeous plant filled environment. Services include Cut, Color, Styling, Treatments, and More. I’ve been open for a year and three months, and getting started was actually very smooth. I’m very fortunate to have the salon partner that I do. She has is been in the industry for many years in San Diego (Lisa T. – Say Lula Salon). She really encouraged me and gave me the confidence in realizing that I could do this. We opened after only one month of renovations, and after truly listening to my clients, I’ve now found my place in the Hair community here. Being a person of color, it can be very difficult to find a professional & reliable stylist, who does a great job. I offer all that and more.
When it comes to music, it’s always been a part of who I am. After my first year of sobriety and a move to California, I was ready to collaborate with other artists. I am now a lead singer in a duo (Half Moon), and will be performing live & streaming next month. It’s so fun to be able to play my new music to my regular clients. Sharing my creativity, in all its forms, is just who I am.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love this question because I’m always telling my clients about the fun new things I find around the city. I am known as a decadent pastry and croissant fanatic. When it comes to sourdough bread and quality cookies, I’m sold!
First, I’d start with Wayfarer Bread, in LaJolla. Gotta buy some sourdough and some sandwiches. (and cookies, of course). Follow that up with croissants and bougie pastries at “ Parisien Gourmandises”.
I’m a big beach guy so my two favorite beaches are black beach and ocean Beach. Black speech is fun when that Sun is Strong, and Ocean Beach is fun on Wednesdays when they have their farmers market. The energy of both is unforgettable!
Speaking of farmers markets, I’m a farmers market addict so I literally go to all the ones that I can. Some of my favorites are Hillcrest on Sundays, Little Italy on Saturdays, and OB of course.
A few dining spots we’d definitely have to visit are Veganic Thai for their “Crispy Soy Duck Pad Thai”, Donna Jeans “Lasagna”, and Fat Boy Deli”s “Sandwich on a Pickle”.
I’m no longer a night owl but I do love all of the bands and artists that frequent San Diego. You can always find a show to attend almost any week, and I love venues like Soma & Music Box. I’m a big concert guy for artists that I love.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Id honestly have to start with giving thanks to the Lifestyle of Sobriety. My entire life changed when I decided to put down drugs and alcohol. I’ve dedicated the rest of my life to following my passions and helping others awaken into theirs. I would definitely add my colleague & salon partner Lisa Telepman (Say Lula Salon) as well. I wouldn’t be able to do it without her!
