We had the good fortune of connecting with Christa Schott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
While I traditionally would consider myself conservative and risk-averse, I feel taking well thought out, calculated risks are the key to growth both personally and professionally. Throughout my life I feel I learned the most about myself by taking risks, overcoming a fear which is really just a wall I built up in my own head, and once I conquered that risk I feel I have been rewarded very much for it.
I once had a fear of flying- I thought it was just too risky and unsafe. So what I did is I went to flight school and learned all about the mechanics of flying, the safety of the aircraft and my confidence grew with every flight. Overcoming that fear and falling in love with flying was a good lesson learned that I have continued to apply in my life.
In business we can continue with our heads down and just keep doing the day to day work and be stagnant or, we can dream bigger, find the well thought out opportunity and have the confidence to take the risk of growth in order to be rewarded.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my company, Alliant Consulting, when I was 22 years old. At the time I saw an opportunity for building a business yet I hadn’t had any business experience nor did I take a single business class in college (that would have been very helpful!). I was young and inexperienced but determined and not afraid of hard work. I really didn’t know however, what I was in for…
Without experience I couldn’t get work. Without getting work I couldn’t get experience. It was a difficult conundrum at the time and one I thought would prevent my company from ever being able to take off.
Fast forward 20 years later the company has expanded nationally with over 60 employees and is recognized as the largest labor compliance firm in the US.
What have I learned along the way? Do what’s right. Many of the companies that were our former competitors have gone out of business for cutting corners or not being reliable with their work. Our work is difficult to do but by keeping integrity at the forefront of our work we have been able to not only succeed but also to thrive and grow- our clients have been with us for years because of it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having lived in America’s Finest City for over 20 years I feel like a local yet also a tourist at the same time. There are so many things to do here it’s difficult to leave and, always an adventure.
Lunch then walking around downtown Coronado is a must, then drinks at the Del an fireside s’mores watching the sunset on their private beach is heaven.
Brunch at El Prado then taking in the museums at Balboa Park is fun, the exhibits are constantly changing which make it a new experience every time.
Renting a Duffy boat and crossing the bay from downtown to Bali Hai is fun. Tie up at the dock and enjoy a Mai Tai before you head back home.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to recognize the amazing team of Alliant who inspire me to be a better person every single day. I am honored to work alongside some of San Diego’s brightest talent who keep me supported and motivated daily.
