We had the good fortune of connecting with Catalina Furra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catalina, what makes you happy? Why?
What makes me the most happy are the little things. I work at always being present in the moment that surrounds me, and from there I can see the beauty in everything. Something that I hope to capture within my work are the little moments that make life all that it is. Whether that’s watching the last of the sunset slip below the horizon or screaming your favorite songs in the car with your friends, I love to capture these ever present moments in my videos through the use of music and vision.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am proud of myself for starting this career with only the ideas in my head and the ambition in my heart. I have had no formal training in film or multi media art. I was always fascinated with music videos and film and loved how they could capture human emotion and create that experience for the viewer. So, I picked up the phone one day and started taking a video of all the small moments I noticed made me feel present in an emotion. Being a music head, I noticed that whenever I’d hear a song, it was like there was a scene playing in my head- a movie scene that song would be the soundtrack to. This is where much of the inspiration for my work comes from. I asked my friends freshman year of college if they wanted to make a music video with me and I recorded them at a local beach singing to the song Some by Steve Lacy. It was such a blast creating the scene I had saw in my head with my best friends, and I knew after that that this is what I wanted to pursue. My favorite thing about video is the collaborative aspect of it. I love talking with other creatives and bringing these ideas to life. A big lesson I’ve learned is to “just ask”! All of the videos I’ve made have been me just asking a brand if I could shoot something for them, or me going up to a band at a show and asking if they want to make a music video. People are really so inviting and I’ve come across so many opportunities this way. From hearing this story, I hope people try more things out of their comfort zone like this because there’s a whole world full of opportunity if you just ask!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The last time I had friends visit, I took them to Victoria st beach in Laguna for a beach day. There’s a magical energy about that beach, especially at sunset, that’s amazing. Laguna in general is such an awesome place to visit with a lot of beautiful little hidden beaches on every street. For as many meals as I can, I go to Zabb Thai for the BEST Thai food. They have a huge vegan menu and the staff are so kind, it’s for sure my favorite restaurant in the OC. I also took them to Lido to walk around the harbor and go to the little ice cream shop at Malibu Farm. Another fun thing to do around the Newport Harbor is to rent a Duffy boat with friends, I did this on my last birthday and had a blast. One last thing I’d recommend is going to the LAB Anti-Mall, there’s colorful murals everyday and fun shops to look at, that area is really cool.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents for supporting me throughout all my creative endeavors. They raised me to do whatever I choose to do with passion and with full commitment. It was this attitude that’s helped me push myself to expand and continue to grow. They have invested in me emotionally and financially, as they are always excited to hear what I’m doing and give me advice, as well as have given me the equipment I used to start this journey. With the tools they have provided me, I am able to be my best self and throw myself into the unfamiliar-as in this unknown is where I’ve found the most growth and success.
