We had the good fortune of connecting with Carrie Herndon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carrie, what matters most to you?
Integrity, or the practice of honesty, truthfulness and doing what is right, has been and always will be the number one guiding principle for myself and my small business. If you practice integrity, your clients will always know what to expect from you. If you practice integrity, people will look up to you and feel emotionally safe. For me, integrity is a pillar of strength.

What should our readers know about your business?
The STEM Zone Maker Space is a family friendly location for all ages and abilities. Our Maker Space is equipped with computers, lasers, vinyl cutters, a variety of wood, gallons of paint, acrylic, leather, resin and more. We offer after school Maker Space enrichment classes, Parent Cild Workshops, Mom’s Night Outs, Birthday Parties, Scouting Badge Workshops, team building, fundraisers…… We are geared towards people wanting to learn and try something new.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In my former life I was a high school science teacher. So, my friends tend to enjoy learning (just like me). We would start off at The STEM Zone Maker Space – most likely resin pouring and designing gifts for our family for the upcoming Holidays (think making some jewelry). Knowing my science minded friends, we would spend some time at Free Flight Bird Sanctuary. Then, we would enjoy a hike in the Los Penasquitos Canyon. We would grab lunch at one of the locally owned restaurants in Highlands Village Place – maybe Pita 22. Our evening would involve catching the sunset at Torrey Pines State Park. Dinner would probably take us to Vittorio’s in Highlands Village Place. Knowing my science minded friends, we would spend some time at Free Flight Bird Sanctuary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Success at The STEM Zone Maker Space is a result of a handful of people working behind the scenes. First and foremost, my family provided me with the foundation to build my small business. Without their encouragement I would still be spinning wheels and not gaining traction.

I need to give recognition to my very first employee, Janice. Janice brings a sense of creativity with her every time that she walks through the door. Often in the mornings, Janice and I sit down and run through a laundry list of things. What I love about having Janice on my team – she always gives me a different perspective for me to consider.

The Poway Chamber of Commerce, The Small Business Development Center, and the SBA T.H.R.I.V.E program have all provided me with the tolls to run a successful small business. I have taken numerous classes, meet one on one with several advisors, lenders, marketing gurus, you name it! There are resources available if you take the time to look for them.
