We had the good fortune of connecting with Brock Van Pelt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brock, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The Charities has been more of a lifestyle than it has been a business at times. At least for some of us, almost all things in our personal lives contribute to our role in this band. When it comes to having a job to pay the bills and maintaining the progression of the band, sometimes it’s difficult to balance working for other people while working for yourself. The more the band progresses the more we can visualize the possibility of making this project our full time job. At that point it will be more about balancing personal endeavors and time spent playing in the band.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Charities is a musical group whose style and music is deeply rooted in the rich sentiment of what the west coast truly is. We’re best known for our original music that bends genres and often transcends various time periods. This is also what we are most proud about. We can attribute how far we’ve come to a lot of hard work and perseverance over the years. We also credit the wonderful community of musicians who have become role models for us. Was it easy? No. Do we love it? Absolutely.
One thing that we have all learned in this project is that nothing ever lasts. Even hard times. If you can push through the challenges and keep your head in the game, eventually hard times can accelerate success. For us, it’s just important to know how to be resourceful and play the hand you’re dealt. As the lead singer and founder of this band, making music and writing songs is how I overcame the hardships of my personal life. Learning how to be resilient and determined has become The Charities mantra.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would love to give a shoutout to all of our friends, family, and fans that have helped us to reach the success that we have achieved already. It’s so amazing being surrounded by so many wonderful people. This is a shoutout to anyone who wears our tee shirts, has come to our shows, listens to our music, has become our friends, and have approached us just to say that they appreciate what we’re doing and to keep doing it. Thank yew!
