We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I love anime and fashion and noticed two things about the niche: 1) There was a negative stigma associated with those that like anime and most were ashamed to admit that they liked it. 2) There weren’t many apparel companies that offered wearable or minimalistic anime pieces that made it easier to style with your existing wardrobe. The purpose of creating Unique Style Code was to inspire people to “do both” by creating anime inspired fashion pieces that they feel comfortable wearing and styling!

What should our readers know about your business?
My business Unique Style Code is all about inspiring people to “do both” by rocking their favorite anime in a fashionable way. One thing that sets us apart from other similar brands is that we create original designs and typically target underserved anime that we believe deserve more love.

When evaluating my next collections, I try to have a unique approach to designs and avoid using patterns, symbols that are overused by other companies. I feel that there is a ton of concepts to work with and I want to take a different approach with my designs. For example, we offer custom designed satin lined hoodies with custom anime eyes embroidered across the chest.

It has been a difficult journey so far with taking this approach and the over saturation of the market.

I stay motivated because I feel passionately our purpose and filling the gap that I see within the market. Overcoming challenges takes a lot of trial and error – whether you are creating multiple product samples, making adjustments to business plans, or even rebranding. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to never undervalue yourself or your product in order to try to gain customers or followers. Those that truly appreciate and respect your brand recognize your value and pay your price.

Don’t overlook the underdogs! As Unique Style Code scales and we continue to build community, we will be able to offer even more variety. As a small business, it is necessary to start small but everyone had to start somewhere. We have big plans for the remainder of this year and going into 2023!
