We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Lambert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I grew up in a time when there weren’t many diverse role models, and when they did exist, they were sidekicks or mentors or stereotypical. I was fortunate enough to not fall into the mindset of that being all I could be. So, with each story I produce or each project I take on, I amplify the voices of those that have historically been silent. With each release, I am able to increase the reach of my voice and speak to schools, classes, and artists directly. Art itself is part of our lifeblood, so being able to create and influence the next generation is a place I continue to aspire to.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Comics are a niche market and Black comics are even more niche. So, while it wasn’t a struggle to start, staying relevant and topical is always work. The community itself is very welcoming and the creators within it are a wealth of knowledge. I started as a novelist and moved into comic production. That move helped me already be fairly acquainted with the production and release process. But comics are their own form of storytelling, one I wanted to make sure that I respected. So, when I began writing Justice, for Wingless Comics, I took time to learn the art form. I strive to bundle a message of hope and discovery into each story, while also asking questions about life. Justice and Wingless Comics are heroic and adventurous comics, with art that rivals any mainstream company, but also speak to my experience and the experience of many like me. From Justice, our black-winged angel, to HER, a water elemental, to Immortalis, a historical fiction, Wingless Comics represents the diverse and incredible world around us. We represent a world that has historically had little voice in fantasy, super heroics, and comics.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s no place better than California to see everything from the mountains to the beaches. But I think I would start in Santa Barbara, there are some nice museums and wineries. On day 2, we would have to hit one of the Santa Barbara beaches, just for the view. We would need to stop in Burbank/Hollywood Between the comic shops, Universal Studios, Warner Studios, and Disney Animation Studios, there’s enough art to stay occupied, as well as enough amusements. I couldn’t call it a California trip if we didn’t head down to San Diego. Sea World, Old Town, The Gaslamp, there’s enough to round out a week and some of the best weather to really enjoy the California feel. Would have to end the trip with dinner at El Cholo in LA and a trip to watch a sporting event at the Crypto Center.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My entire Wingless team holds me up, but I wouldn’t be where I am without Malachi Bailey and Brett Hillesheim. Keithan Jones, Greg Anderson Elysee, and Jason Reeves were 3 of the first creators to welcome me into the field. Black Comix Day isn’t a person but it’s a venue where we are all on display, it was my first convention. My peers at Unlikely Heroes Studios, Constant Hustle Comics, Konkret Comics, Concept Moon Studios, 4th Wall Productions, and so many others have kept me inspired when I was low. Terri Barraza, Sandy Martin, and the rest of the Black Hand kept me on track when I was in school. And of course, I wouldn’t be here at all if it weren’t for my family.
