Meet Brett Christenson | CEO Iron Goat Defense (Security Services)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brett Christenson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brett, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision we have made in starting our own business has been putting it in the hands of God. Everything good that has happened has come from the faith that He will provide. Everything we have from the contracts to employees have been by His blessing. We tried the usual methods of advertising, cold calling, Indeed, and Monster, but had no success with contracts or quality employees. Every time we prayed and released our worries to God, we instantly had a phone call for a new contract or email from a job applicant. Our employees fit our values of excellence, honor, and integrity. Additionally, our contracts have been with people or organizations who also have traditional values that care about people, families, and our country.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Iron Goat Protection was a vision that began with my brother-in-law, Sam Jones. He worked in the Executive Protection industry for 10 years and always wanted to own his own company. My prior experience is 20 years Special Ops in the Coast Guard. When our families came together it was all hands on deck. Everyone naturally gravitated towards certain aspects of the business. My sister-in-law, Brittany Jones, was the driving force to get our PPO license. She worked tirelessly for months doing paperwork, emailing, and following up on our process. As soon as we got our PPO license we instantly got our first major contract. So we got thrusted into building out all our backend portals from payroll, scheduling, timesheets, hiring, and accounting. We all worked 12 hour + days putting heart into this business to make it successful. We have been growing rapidly ever since and been able to keep up because we built a solid foundation.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in Carlsbad and love the area. Our favorite breakfast place is Swami’s down in Carlsbad village then heading out for a nice beach walk after. If you’re a local, Teri Cafe is a long standing favorite lunch spot of ours. It has good, clean food and wonderful customer service. For casual dinner we eat at Casero’s in Bressi Ranch or if we want to dress up we head to the Chart House in Cardiff.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I first met my wife the day I walked into Awaken Church. She was working part-time as a guard for the church and multiple people said that we would get along. 1.5 years later we now own our own security company with my wife’s sister and brother-in-law. Our success comes from God being at the center of everything we do along with quality communication and strong family connection.
