We had the good fortune of connecting with Bree Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bree, how do you think about risk?
I think for me risk taking is 100% the most important thing in my life. I am someone who is highly motivated when things are new and different and when I see opportunities for growth. If my life feels or becomes stagnant my art can also become stale. For me if something scares you or makes you nervous you should always move in that direction because there is where you will most often find the biggest growth.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
An accident was actually beginning of my art career. I had an accident in Sri Lanka which left me not being able to work as s surf instructor for a month. I was sitting in a dark little house in Sri Lanka missing the ocean so I began painting the things I missed the most. I realised I had a pretty natural talent for painting and others began to notice quickly and boom, people began asking to buy my paintings and it began from there.

My biggest challenge is actually within myself. I started doing a lot of custom paintings and painting what I thought people wanted for their homes. I sort of lost my artistic flare and was burnt out. My art began to be not a reflection of who I am but more of scenes from around the world that other people wanted.
I am actually still over coming the challenges as I write this. I became an artist at a pretty young age so I was still developing as a person. Naturally I was going to change as a person and I think I did but I didn’t let my art evolve into something new but kept trying to hold on to what I thought others wanted me to create.
Right now, being in Berlin Germany I am starting on a joinery of painting what I want to paint again. Instead of thinking about the aesthetics of someones home needs, I am trying to find my spark for telling a story of who I am through my art.

I want people to know that I have a lot more to say through my art than what is being observed. I have a lot of energy and interests in more complex ways of observing the world and I am happy to finally show that through my art. Contrary to what my aesthetic is implying, I am not a laid back seascape artist. My mind is always looking for puzzles to solve and I am very action oriented, I am hoping in this next chapter of my art career I can encompass a more authentic representation of who I am as a person and as an artist.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would suggest we both go to a place we haven’t been and do things we have both never done. Nothing brings people closer than an unexpected adventure. Discovering more about yourself along the way.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom for giving me the independence, space and freedom to explore and develop my own individual path in life.
