We had the good fortune of connecting with Brande “Kurvy” J and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brande “Kurvy”, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
WOW! My thought process was “I wanted to be a voice for women like me.” Women who have overcame abuse and trauma, women who turned their pain into power, women who were told they were too fat to be considered beautiful, women who were told to be silent, women who had fight in them and was not going to listen to anything that was told to them.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
J Entertainment & Media Group is home to Luxe Kurves Magazine, the #1 Upscale Lifestyle Brand Magazine for the Kurvy woman, The Brandee J Show a talk show that is for the real every day woman, State of the Black Woman brand and Brandee J the media personality. Our brand (yes our) because it’s not mine but GOD’s, my teams and the people) is here to tell our stories, uplift, empower and inspire communities of color. We are here to change how we are being seen in the media and to show the world of media that we will do it our way. I’ve always been the rebel and wanting to do things right. Growing up I was the one defending the people who were picked on by bullies and I was the underdog. It was not until my Grandmother told me “Lil Sarah, you are destined for greatness and it won’t be easy but you must fight and be that voice.” I did not know what she meant back than but now I do. JEMG is a media house like nothing else. We are original and unique. We fight for the underdog in every arena. Has it been hard? Hell yes it has! I’ve been betrayed by managers, ex-team members, industry associates and family but through it all I rise stronger and more determined.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love my city of San Diego! So beautiful and so much to do! I first would take her to Sunset Cliffs then to my favorite beach, which is Coronado beach. Once we are done I then would go shopping at Plaza Bonita Mall and Fashion Valley Mall. Knowing her we would both want some Mexican Food from Southeast San Diego also known as Encanto. Southeast San Diego in my opinion has the best taco shops in the city! After eating we would go get some drinks in North Park. I honestly would look up a spot I never been too and pick it!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, I have a couple of people to give credit too. I want to dedicated this shoutout to the following my mother, my children Quentin and Jada, sister (s) Amber, Delilah, Kisha, Brittany, Pam, my girlfriend Sonfre, my mentor Cassandra and life coach Amber L. All of you have helped me become better in every aspect of my life. You all have seen something great in me even when I do not see it in myself. I’m blessed to have you all a part of my life and as my tribe.
