Meet Bob Muller | Father and plumbing Contractor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bob Muller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bob, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I honestly had no thought when starting my business. Back when I started , all I had was a skill , not knowledge. My skill was thinking being the best plumber would lead into a successful business. The truth is I thought I knew more than my boss and I truly never liked working for anyone. I always was a leader at everything I ever did , so the next challenge for me was to start my own business. I’m now in the phase of my life where I’m giving back , and am writing my own book on this subject matter. I truly wish i had knowledge and would have read the type of book I can now write.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m currently writing a book on this subject matter in hopes to encourage struggling business owners to use my recipe I wrote for success. I started out my journey as a young plumbing contractor so that I could do things my way and to be my own boss. I was truly naive and had no knowledge of business ownership. My mindset was one of a leader with a ton of passion and discipline that would allow me to struggle and not fail for a very long time before I finally understood that owning a plumbing business was not about knowing plumbing. I spent over 20 years just getting by until I focused on running a business. I come from a generation that didn’t have information in the palm of your hands. We used paper receipts, hand held radios to communicate, maps to navigate, and advertised ( if you could afford it ) in the yellow pages. In those days advertisers were in the book by alphabetic order. It didn’t matter how long you were in business so I understood early that my advantage over others was to start my company with a letter in the first part of the alphabet. I lived in the Mountains of SunRiver Oregon next to Mt. Bachelor, so I started out as Bachelor Plumbing. I learned leadership as a young Infantry soldier serving at Ft Ord and being a part of an elite light Infantry unit where I was promoted quickly and led my peers in which I trained with. I was a natural born leader and I always have been a creative mind type of guy with an entrepreneur mindset. This mindset was also one that made being in high school a challenge which led to my 2.0 GPA. I didn’t lack intelligence, I lacked motivation to be held in 4 walls where my creativity was locked up. In my day we didn’t have influencers, social media, or youtube at our fingertips. We had to learn either from trial and error or know that you need to hire a mentor. I truly believe that we now live in a time where it is easier than ever to be successful in business with all the information we have in front of us. I went on a 5 year journey from 2015 to 2020 to truly plug into the digital tech space and learn business. I learned the importance of branding and now have a very strong brand in our community. I learned how to get myself ranked number 1 on google in 5 key categories and now my phone rings without advertising so I don’t have to spend money the way I used to. I learned I needed to build systems and processes to grow. I learned I needed to hire smart people and create key roles. I learned the power of leveraging debt as an asset to grow. I had almost all the right ingredients to not fail for over 20 years but it took me the last 7 years to develop and overuse the key ingredients I was missing when starting out. The key inside ingredient I lacked was knowledge. I wasn’t a reader or one to listen. Once I understood I don’t have all the answers and I tapped my brain into 24/7 constantly taking in information, I finally took my business to the success I have today. Knowledge is power and in this day and age of information, it is the key to one’s success. There are so many success stories and mentors on social media, it is now easier than ever to be a success.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For me , I’m a beach town guy. I love to travel our coast line and take in all the great beach towns along the way. I would absolutely start my friends off in my beloved city of Oceanside California. I would likely stop to eat at the LTH and go for a walk on the Oceanside Pier. I’m a big fan of Coronado island , and the great culture that town offers. La jolla is a must stop along the way and a night cap baseball game at Petco Park would be a great way to end the night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is a great question. I truly give all my success and credit to my Mother for everything I am today. My mother was a German orphan of the 1930s Nazi generation who never had a family until us boy’s. Myself and my brother who unfortunately passed in 2015 before my Moms passing in 2019. My mother gave me strength and was my backbone for anything my creative mind blew up. She always had my back. I never feared failure because of my Mother. She was my major strength and always my biggest fan. She put so much confidence in me that I knew I could never fail.
