We had the good fortune of connecting with Bianca Zalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bianca, how do you think about risk?
I think risk taking is often necessary when striving to achieve big goals. You realize just how limitless your possibilities can be which can really motivate you to try harder and see how much more you can achieve. I believe you gain so much more from taking risks for your dreams compared to confining yourself to the walls of what is comfortable, standard or normal for you. We are often conditioned to believe that we must follow a specific routine or a path in life. We learn from taking risks that we don’t have to place these boundaries on ourselves. You learn some of your best lessons by taking risks. Even if some thing didn’t work out the way you had hoped by taking a risk, these can still be incredible opportunities to grow what you are hoping to accomplish.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer and entertainer. What I truly love is to immerse myself in my artistry, own my authentic self, share pride in my culture and encourage others to do the exact same whilst uplifting people by giving them an energetic space to have fun, be themselves and perhaps even feel a sense of hope during these challenging times we face in this world. Life is hard, and I love to at least help people to smile, laugh, dance and have a genuinely great time. I love performing and bringing people together so that we can all experience a sense of freedom in our joy even if it’s momentary. I’m a Puerto Rican girl born and raised in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As an inner city kid, we didn’t quite have the luxury of going to fancy dance and music schools. I had also seen a whole lot of struggle within my community including the disparities, discrimination and stereotypes placed on us. But I knew pretty early on what I wanted to do and the kind of excitement and joy I wanted to bring people. I knew I wanted to carry out a sense a strength that I had seen within the Puerto Rican community to pursue my dreams and break out from the box we are all often placed in as a limit to our capacity for success.
I had struggled for YEARS with severe anxiety and OCD. This had significantly impacted my behaviors and decisions to try to take risks and pursue things. I found myself playing it “safe” and trying to live by a way that was deemed the right away to live. However, I became conflicted as I knew I was capable of so much more. I began making shifts by focusing even more on pursuing my singing and seeing what opportunities were out there. I decided I was going to give up my previous life of working long hours at jobs I did not feel fulfilled in and immerse myself fully into who I wanted to truly be. I moved to South Florida and began singing with an entertainment company where I get hired to sing at many venues throughout South Florida. I also began working exclusively with an agency so I can continue my work as a commercial and TV actress. Shifting was definitely scary at first but I realized it was not as scary as I thought it would be in my head because I knew what I wanted. The best way to deal with my anxiety was to face it head on. There is a level of uncertainty that cannot be unsettling for many people. However, this is where believing in yourself becomes paramount and a decision to not be overcome by your fears and anxieties but to be propelled forward by the deep rooted belief in your heart of hearts that you can make your life! I would certainly hope that my story can truly impact those young girls who struggle to believe in themselves because of their circumstances and limits often placed on them. Be moved by what you do and go for it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Now that I am living in South Florida I have been having a blast exploring some amazing areas! I love walking along the Broadwalk of Hollywood beach and when I get too hot I jump right into the water which is always so refreshing! I also love visiting the Sunset Club rooftop bar and lounge or I get an amazing view of Hollywood Beach and the Bay while enjoying some good music and good food! I also love visiting Lauderdale by the Sea for more laid-back vibe! I’m always a fan of breakfast and brunch so I love going to First Watch, Three Palms Cafe for the best Cuban coffee, the Village Café in Fort Lauderdale and Pani’s Bistro in Aventura. I can always go for a great cup of café con leche so Cuban coffee is a must in South Florida!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate the shoutout to my husband Ricky for his incredibly loving support and encouragement to achieve my dreams and remain focused on pursuing them no matter what. He is my biggest cheerleader and I’m thankful for him everyday.
