Meet Becah Corbin | Graphic Designer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Becah Corbin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Becah, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I am a type A personality who loves to organize and be helpful. But I also have a wildly spontaneous side that enjoys the opportunity to color outside the lines. Graphic design can be the perfect career for someone who is trying to marry their artistic and organizational sides.
In some ways, my career was predestined. In others, I have had to consciously choose this career over and over again. There were lengths of time when I worked in different industries while working design on the side. But I always found myself back in the role of designer.
Because I have had the good fortune of being raised by a fine artist and graphic designer, I learned both at home and professionally. Thanks to this, many of my artistic skills were being cultivated and encouraged from a young age.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
First and foremost, I am a designer. What I am inherently good at is helping people identify their strengths and find solutions to their problems. Being a good designer extends far beyond being a good artist. Fortunately, I have been gifted with both skills and prefer to focus those skills on being as purposeful and intentional as possible.
Currently, I am a full-time Graphic Designer for the City of San Diego, and in my freelance work, I tend to work with clients who are in the business of public service or education. In my now 20 years of work experience, I have worked and learned in a wide array of professional arenas including design, branding, customer service, civil and criminal law, and marketing.
The struggles I have endured the most were regarding self-awareness and how my identity informed my life as a designer/artist. Most of us have jobs because we need them and are not afforded the privilege of choice. To overcome and endure a lack of choice, one must continue to invest in themselves. This could include being curious about the world and following your enthusiasm.
I look forward to doing more work with like-minded collaborators. Whether that is through design, illustrations, photos, motion graphics, or project management.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would start the morning at Las Cuatro Milpas for a delicious breakfast meal and take a short stroll after to Cafe Moto for a strong cup of coffee. Ideally, it’s the weekend so we can stop by the Spring Valley Swap Meet for more walking and plant shopping. For lunch, we would have poke at Poke Etc. on East 8th Street in National City while we plot for an evening of either museums or music. The day ends with us enjoying the ocean breeze at La Jolla Cove and a drive with the windows down.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Throughout my career, I have had many fantastic mentors. Due to economic reasons, all of my education was informally on the job. Shoutout to my mom, Rachel, Louis, Danny, Miranda, and every designer on YouTube who makes information accessible.
