Meet Audrey Spina | Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Audrey Spina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Audrey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It started with being a terrible employee, which I was. I had been fired from countless jobs for being a bit too outspoken, Type A, opinionated, and otherwise. It was a bit crushing to my self esteem but eventually I realized that some people are better cut out to work for themselves, and I was one of them. So as I was on the precipice of being fired from my job as an esthetician, I thought to myself, why not just take clients at home? So that is what I ended up doing. I set up a room to do waxing and spray tanning and never looked back.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my business out of a desperate need to live life on my own terms. What I didnt know at the time was that spray tanning would end up being the thing that created it. It’s been an interesting ride, starting a work from home model and then eventually opening a little shop in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Hiring an employee was terrifying and I did it all wrong, paying her an exorbitant amount of money, then having to walk her pay back months later. She cried in my office because she had just had her roommate move out since she was making such good money. There is one thing I have learned is absolute in matters of work and life. When things flow easily, with minimal to no resistance, you’re on the right path. When there is extreme turmoil and trouble, you need to stop and reassess and change directions. So yes, my business carried on easily, and grew easily every year.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I read so many books when I was younger that I think eventually ascended from my conscious and made themselves known to me years later. The one that comes to mind is “The Magic of Believing” by Claude M. Bristol. It was written in 1948, which was pretty bold for that time, considering manifestation didn’t really become main stream for many decades later. I think when I read it as a teenager I did some manifestation “experiments” and was able to prove them over and over to myself. I needed to run wild in my 20’s but eventually in my 30’s I put these ideas into play and created the life I wanted.
