We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Yandle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks and being an entrepreneur go hand and hand. You no longer have the security of someone else paying your paycheck, making sure you have health insurance, helping retirement contributions, and all the other perks of working for a company. I knew in 2012, when I quit my corporate sales job that I was taking a risk. But, my belief in myself, and my passion for helping women become strong and confident through health and fitness was bigger than my fear. I have always been someone who likes change and likes to take risks. My biggest successes have come when I took the risk and jumped. I love planning, and spend lots of time mapping out what and how I am going to do something. But, at the end of the day you can only plan so much. There are only so many safeguards you can put into place to ensure everything goes as planned. Ultimately, you need to take the risk, trust in your abilities, and know that you are capable of anything you put your mind to. That being said, I have absolutely fallen on my face in the almost 10 years owning, Ashley Lane. My biggest piece of advice is to have confidence in yourself and be willing to pivot at all times. As a business owner there is always uncertainty, and we learned this more than ever in 2020. I had to completely pivot my business in order to continue to work with my clients. I didn’t skip a beat. I found out we were quarantined on a Thursday, and by Monday 100% of my clients were now training with me via Zoom from their homes. Was I scared they would hate it? That they would all decide they didn’t want to pay my fee for training in their own homes? YES! But, I pivoted, created a new way to train my clients with whatever equipment they had. Honestly, my business has doubled. I am now working with clients all over the US, not just in San Diego. Take the risk, believe in yourself, and know that you are always going to need to pivot.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets Ashley Lane apart from other personal trainers is my philosophy and the multiple ways you can work with me. I approach personal training with the goal of creating lasting health and fitness routines that my clients incorporate into their life long term. There isn’t one solution for everyone when it comes to personal training. Each client has different goals, availability and ability to workout, different equipment available to them, as well everyone is in a different financial situation. I want to be able to provide the best plan for each client. Over the last 10 years, I have created several customized ways to work with clients. I offer one on one and semi-private personal training. These sessions are done in person in my private gym, which is openair, and all safety measures are followed to Covid protocol. I also offer one on one and semi private personal training via Zoom. Since March 2020, 90% of my one on one and semi-private sessions are done via Zoom, and it has been amazing! I can now work with clients all over the United States, clients that have moved away, and friends from all over can train together. I have seen a huge increase in results with my clients, because they are more consistent with their sessions, due to the convenience of being able to do all their workouts at home. All of my clients receive brand new custom workouts every week. I created the Ashley Lane App in 2019, as a way to level up my Online Training Program. I found that my personal training clients wanted me to write their solo workouts for them as well as seeing me in person. There was also a need for a more cost effective way to work with me, but not lose the accountability and level of training you get with personal training. The Ashley Lane App syncs with myftinesspal, fitbit, and the Apple watch, which is a great way to have one dashboard for everything, and allows for a comprehensive view of what is happening with a client, even when I don’t get to see them in person or on Zoom. Each week my clients receive new upper body and lower body workouts to complete. When you open the workout there is a video of me training you exactly how I would if we were in person or on Zoom, as well as written training cues. I always provide a dumbbell and band option, as well as fitness level modifications for every exercise. Clients can message me through the app, and there is a private group chat for community and accountability. We can track all your metrics: weight, measurements, progress pictures, strength abilities, customized habits, etc in the app. This way, no matter how a client is motivated, we can create those goals within the app and track their progress. All workouts can be done solo, which is a great option for clients. All my one on one and semi private clients have access to the Ashley Lane App, and they can add on Online Training if they want their solo workouts written for them. I began Zoom Group Workouts when quarantine started, as a way to create a sense of community. I used to do a monthly Balboa Park bootcamp, and was sad when those needed to stop. But, being able to workout with so many people from all over the United States via zoom, has been amazing! I host these on Wednesdays at 5:30pm PST. Our group Zoom workouts are full body, and incorporate lots of compound movements and are fast paced. I have always done 3 Challenges a year, as a way to jump start a fitness routine or as a way to step up an existing routine. Every challenge is different, but all of them include full access to the Ashley Lane App. I love adding in IG Live and Zoom workouts as a way to increase accountability and have that sense of community. All workouts can be done solo, which is a great option for clients. My goal as a trainer is to create a plan that works for you and your schedule, so that you will stick with it and achieve your goals!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many amazing things to do in San Diego! I love heading over to Coronado, and grabbing lunch and drinks at The Henry. With covid, we have enjoyed eating our to go food in the park, at the beach, or even at the Hotel Del Coronado. We live across the street from Balboa Park, so spending the day there is another favorite of mine. Enjoying hiking the trails, to kicking the soccer ball around or playing tennis, there is just so much to do outdoors! We love to enjoy a picnic in the park as well. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Ashley Lane Community! My clients are truly the most amazing peopl.e, and I am so grateful to get to work with them every week. I have trained most of my clients for over 6 years. I have had the honor of going through some of life’s most significant moments with them: weddings, babies, the passing of loved ones. We are truly and family and they make what I do so rewarding.
