Meet Ashley McCarthy | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley McCarthy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from the Bay Area, born and raised in the North Bay. My upbringing impacted me greatly. My parents have always been supportive of my artistic passions growing up and all throughout school. My older brother was also into art, so that impacted me as well. The dedication I was instilled with in my upbringing continues on to this very day. My mom is always asking me to text her photos of what I’m currently working on, which I love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Ashley McCarthy and I’m a visual artist based in Southern California, specializing in hand-made collage art. I started making art at the age of three and the rest is history! Painting and drawing were my biggest passions growing up and all throughout school. Life drawing and printmaking became my focus in collage. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art at Sonoma State University. 2018 was the year that I discovered my love for collage as a medium. I’ve been evolving my unique, hand-cut process ever since. My work tends to fall under the surreal category as I love thinking outside the box. I love being playful and expressive with various textures in my collages. Music has been a big passion as well throughout my life, so I naturally combined my love of art with music. I began making cover artwork for music artists. What I’ve learned throughout this journey, is to always persist with your passions and that’s exactly what I’ve done. The goal is to keep creating and evolving as a visual artist, and continue working with amazing music artists.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a beach person, so definitely the beach! I love Manhattan beach, Redondo beach, as well as OC beaches. Catalina Island is also amazing. Some of my favorite restaurants are Yum Thai Bistro, Casa Vega, and Handel’s ice cream is great as well. I love Rancho Palos Verdes for great hiking spots!
