We had the good fortune of connecting with Ariel Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ariel, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I first began my career as a therapist in 2014. I started off working for several non profits and treatment facilities in the local Los Angeles and Orange County surrounding areas. I learned a lot during this period of time and I am grateful for these experiences. I enjoyed the clientele and clinical work that I was doing, however I knew deep down inside that I had a burning desire to open my own practice someday.

It wasn’t until 2019 when I decided to branch out and take the steps to start my own private practice. During this period of time I didn’t have any business experience. Unfortunately, nobody taught me about billing, marketing, website building, or networking. In fact, I had no idea where I wanted the location of my office nor did I have any furniture to put inside of it. Unfortunately I had to start my own practice completely from scratch.

The first couple years were extremely hard. I remember spending countless hours behind the scenes scrambling to figure everything out. I was so desperate and determined to make this practice work and I was willing to do whatever it took. Over the years my practice has become my baby and I take extreme pride in being able to provide my clients with the best level of care that I can.

I will say that my work-life balance is completely different now compared to when I first started. Most of my friends and family would describe me as a workaholic and that I have an extraordinarily different work ethic compared to most people. However, over the years I have tremendously slowed down and learned the importance of being able to enjoy the little things. I realize that my practice would not exist or be where its at today without self care and my mental health. I truly believe in practicing what I preach in order for me to sustain the career and client care I provide. In the future, I still plan on continuing my future self growth and development as a therapist.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I provide holistic, client centered psychotherapy services to adults, teens, adolescents, couples and families. I specialize in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief/loss, panic attacks, sexual trauma, substance abuse, relational conflict and adults with previous childhood trauma. My practice is located in Long Beach, California and I have almost 10 years of experience in the field.

During the therapeutic process, I hope to walk side by side all my clients and allow them to process their inner struggles at a rate and pace that is comfortable. I truly believe that it is important for all my clients to feel safe and grounded throughout the time we spend together.

Most of my background and education has been in the field of psychodynamic therapy. This form of in-depth talk counseling originated from the of study of psychoanalysis. Unlike other styles of therapy, psychodynamic is a long-term style of counseling that requires commitment. It isn’t mean for those that are looking for a quick fix or “band-aide” style of coping. The majority of the clients that seek treatment from me are yearning for deep-rooted, meaningful changes. They understand that true inner healing is a process that doesn’t happen over night. Therefore everyday coping skills such as meditation, exercise or perhaps even talking to a friend might not facilitate the lifestyle changes they are truly looking for. Sometimes it takes a neutral outside observer to help reveal and uncover the subconscious blocks that are preventing one from moving forward and finding their healing.

Psychodynamic therapy highly emphasizes the importance of having a trusting and secure connection between the therapeutic relationship. It explains that clients may not be able to unravel and unpack their deepest fears or insecurities without this baseline of safety.

Becoming a therapist and starting my own practice has not been easy. There have been plenty of unexpected challenges and struggles along the way. I do not think everything would be possible without the love and support from my family and friends. Throughout the years I have learned that with every successful person, there is usually a network or team of people supporting them along the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite places to hang out and relax is downtown Huntington Beach. The reason why I always bring friends/family to this location is because it offers a variety of different activities that are within walking distance. Downtown Huntington is great for bike riding, shopping, dining, or simply lounging at the beach. I would recommend going to “BLK Earth Sea Spirits” if you are in search for a restaurant with an amazing ocean view and tasty appetizers. I am a vegetarian and picky eater myself. However you can find a mix of food options ranging from steaks, fish, and plant based dishes. I like how this restaurant is located upstairs and away from the beach crowd. Even though downtown Huntington is a fun, upbeat, and social place- it sometimes nice to escape the larger crowd and find a quiet spot to watch the ocean.

The next spot I would want to take a friend to is the Huntington Harbor. This is the perfect location if you are into water sports like paddle boarding or kayaking. The ocean is usually calm and peaceful since its surrounded by a residential community. I love being able to workout while also enjoying the fresh ocean water. There is a rental shop called “OC Paddlesports” that is located right by the shore entrance if you don’t have your own equipment. The employees are usually friendly and helpful.

The last place I would recommend going to is Crystal Cove. This is probably one of my most favorite locations to take pictures, hike, or pack a picnic by the beach. I have so many amazing memories with friends and family at this location. Its always a relaxing spot if you are into tidepools, clear ocean waters, and breath taking views. The best time of year to go is Spring because the weather isn’t too hot and all the wild flowers are in full bloom.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my clinical supervisor Dr. Nicki Pike. I don’t think I would be the therapist that I am today without her guidance and knowledge.

I would also like to provide recognition to my fiancé Zachary. He has been there for me through the ups and downs. I consider him the most secure and supportive person in my life.

Lastly, I would like to thank my friends and family for giving me inspiration and encouragement I needed. I don’t know where I would be without these people.
